Did you install the fuel tank pad when the tank was replaced?
Yes. And the tank itself is very tight. There's a lot of other stuff mentioned above that I had not thought about that I can check. I know that my package tray is not fastened down tightly, but I don't think that would give the metal on metal sound that I'm hearing. Plus again it sounds like its coming from way back in the car, not just from the rear of the interior. Pinion snubber bolts sound worth checking too.
The best thing would be to go for a ride in the trunk, but I really don't trust my wife to drive the car with me back there.

Trunk torsion bar rods were notorious for rattling in that year. They barely touch each other and send off a bad rattle type noise. As another writer said: a piece of heater hose between the bars, solves the problem.
Already did that. I was pretty sure that was it but the rubber hose didn't make a difference.
But, I just went out and started man-handling the rear of the car. By bouncing up and down hard enough I heard the rattle. I think I need to get my wife or kid out there with me to poke their head around while I bounce it up and down. Being able to re-produce it in the garage should make it much easier to track down.

Did that do the trick? After shimming the trunk lid and filler panel, I still have that rattle.
I replaced the shock bolts. While laying under the car and having the wife bounce up and down on the trunk it sure seemed to be coming from there. The bolts were tight, but since the shoulders were too long the top of the shock and the bolts themselves were just rattling around in the mounting holes when the suspension unloaded.
But - it rained yesterday and I live on a dirt road so I can't go for a test drive until the mud dries up. Maybe later today if the sun comes out for a while.

My 67 B body did the same thing.. Seems as if the supporting body work ( that you attach the top of the shocks too) will squeeze together, with the right bolts, and hold them snuggly.. I had to retighten mine after install...
