Has anyone successfully installed a tremec into a 71 plymouth without the nearly $6K cost of the keisler conversion. This is a late model hemi in 71 runner, and really want a manual tranny.
thanks

From what found when I looked into this some time back is yes you can put one in yourself for cheaper. You would have to buy a generic tko-600 trans and round up/fab all the other necessary parts. The main issue with that is you won't get a stock shifter location because I don't think anyone sells that shifter location adapter that keisler uses, but I could be wrong. You can shave some $ by not buying the whole kit, but it will add up quick. I think just a bare TKO is over 2 grand, add in custom driveshaft length needed, bellhousing, clutch, flywheel, fab your own trans crossmember, etc etc etc it adds up in $$ fast. I decided to put an 833 trans in mine for now for a lot cheaper.

floor is already modded. I installed a 518 and mad tranny crossmember. It works fine, but would be so much more fun rowing through the gears. I don;t mind the work. I also see quicktime makes bellhousings. Has anyone done this with z-bar or everyone switch to hydralic throwout ?
thanks

If you're good at fabbing/scrounging, you can save a lot of $. I'm putting together my own hydraulic clutch because I can do it for so much cheaper than a stock z-bar/pedal setup. Using a universal slave cylinder to actuate the stock clutch fork. Quicktime bellhousings are good, I was looking at them when I scored a good deal on a NOS lakewood that had been sitting on the shelf for a long time. Even putting in an 833 the costs add up, but I scrounged and was able to save some costs here and there.

What could be a potential source for a "pre-owned" TKO 600??

Dave,....unless your handy at machining/fabrication and have the time for repeated mock-ups, attempt your own install,....however,..Keisler has a lower cost alternate in the T-45 5spd (350-425 ft lb application) these kits depending on your requirements and componets, start at approx $1600-up,....IMHO I'd recommend doing the job once and correctly, using a TKO 600,....I've done a number of 71 B Body application useing the TKO 600,...it is a direct bolt in with regards to everything but the factory Z bar,...I'd recommend the hyd. throwout bearing assy,...if your set on having the factory Z bar, you'll be faced with some fabrication to get the geometry correct,....however the rest of the install is straight forward "bolt-on", console shifter location is dead on,....most important install items are driveline angle verification with a inclination meter, and bellhousing dial-in with a dial indicator

It's an aftermarket-only transmission. I think the mustang cobra supercharged had that transmission in it one year, or a very similar trans but my memory is a bit foggy on that one .

watch fleabay for a tremec 3450 or 3550 out of a mustang....or a T-56 6 speed if you're not worried about hacking the floor.

I have picked up two used TKO600 transmissions from this website http://forums.corral.net/forums/

They don't pop up all of the time, but if you are patient, one will come along. I paid $1,000 for one and $1,100 for the other. Mustang guys swap parts around like most folks change underwear as they are always changing their combos! Most of the turbo guys start off with a stick, then change to an automatic as the power level increases.

search tko600

found 20 hits nationally...looks to be a number of used trannies for ~$1500
