I've never seen a 489 case with a sure-grip tag. As far as I know, the one pictured is for a Dana 60.

Thanks for the heads up on this piece of information. I will definitely look into this area of detail. I have is a posi rear in this car. Do you (or any one else involved with this thread) know why they would put the metal tag on the Dana style rear end with posi but not the 8 & 3/4 with posi? I thought the tag was used to let the person filling the rear (with oil) know that the posi oil additive was required.

Prior to 1969 most Spicer Power-lock equipped passenger car 8 3/4" rears used a round, aluminum sure-grip tag.

Starting in 1969, with the introduction of the Borg Warner Spin resistant differential, the limited slip lube requirement was supposed to be designated with a dalb of paint. Unfortunatley, I can't remember the placement or color.

I have just removed my 8 3/4 from my Los Angeles built 70 340 Cuda, and have started cleaning it. It only has a 3.91 tag on it. No sure grip tag, even though it definitely has a sure grip (Track Pak car). Rear appears to have never been apart. There is an orange paint daub on the filler nut, and a large amount of pink paint on the top of the pumpkin. Could the pink be the code for a sure grip?????

I cannot thank you enough for passing along this information. The rear end colors and logistics still are a mystery for now. We have already "fixed" the error and left the colors just as we found them. I originally thought that the tag might have been removed sometime in the past 38 years. I am beginning to believe that the blue marking I found on the casting might be the color that designated the limited slip setup.

Any way to post some pics? Would really like to see a pic of the L.A. built 70 cuda rearend after the cleaning is done.

What has been the average time from the time the cast date of the chunk to the rear assembly date?

Mine is a '70 and the markings on it are pretty clear at least (and original) but not sure what plant it was from?

I am sorry but I have not researched that year or model of vehicle. Hopefully someone on this thread can answer your question. Good Luck!
