Hey Guys, i want to use LED bulbs to replace the original bulbs. Since they are brighter should i use white for the 1157 brake bulbs or should i use red. I have a 70 barracuda and since the lens is red what will give me the brightest brake light white or red LEDs. Thanks Guys....

A 70 Barracuda is a big taillight lense. Are you buying the expensive ones that fill the area with several dozen LEDS? If you use the little ones you will end up with a small dot of light lost in a sea of unlit lense.
The don't reflect back onto the reflector like an incandescent.

i used (4) 12 led 1157 bulbs in my satellite ... they're a joke imo - not brighter at all, since they occupy such a small area. the taillights look a lot brighter with amber incandescent bulbs

69 Coronet R/T. I recently put the 1157's back in. They fill better. I had the fan-type led's in there and I liked the snap and intensity but they did not fill the light like the old conventional bulb. It's a choice. I don't want to get rearended so I tried it for safety reasons. Did not work for me. Depends on your choice and application.

Clean up the lenses and get the best 1157 long lifes you can find and be done with it.

I purchased the "70 Cuda LED Conversion kit" from HITECH Products 1-818-887-0136, back in July of 06. There are something like 132 led's. You take the bezel & lens off to install them. I had a lot of money in this tube-chasses beast, and I didn't want anybody running into me because they couldn't see me.They're so bright they hurt my eye's. When I cruzed at night and come to a stop light I would put it in park so i could take my foot off the brake, because the peoples face was glowing red from the lights. The lights hurt my eyes, so I figured they might hurt others too, so I was being considerate,(after they stopped) sense they were so close. I "showed" some friends with a 70 Cuda also and they bought the same. They were $179.95 back then, and I'm extremely happy with them. I cannot guarantee you will be though, ...but i am. ...did i mention bright. Click on the attachment.

Agreed..
I tried the fan type LED lites with little sucess. So I re-installed the 1157s'..
However what did help was to paint the inside of the tailite housing with metalic aluminum silver paint. This really helped the reflectivity and overall briteness..

Just my $0.00..

I recommend going with the full LED boards. LED technology has been around for a long time. In the next few years we should be flooded with new styles for our old muscle cars. I'm using boards from Classic LED's on my Challenger. Blinding at night for sure. Here's the youtube link.

LEDs are the only way to go. They don't put out heat which can melt your original plastic, They fire up faster giving people behind you a better reaction time, they will outlast you and your car, on and on. The panel type might be the way to go, or you can look at different size configurations on ebay, that were meant for truck (semi) applications, and maybe able to fit something close in your housing, or you can easily make your own if you have a soldering gun, breadboard that you cut to fit you application, and the right resistors. The materials are cheap. These companies charging hundreds of dollars for $10 worth of parts should be shot or run out of town. Look it up on the web and learn to make your own. How do you think these other yahoos did it? It ain't rocket science. I replaced every standard light in my Suburban with LEDs and couldn't be happier!

I concur. Got 'em from various different manufacturers and eBay on all four cars. Acura Vigor with side markers and front running lights.
Supra has front turn signals, side markers, and taillight/brake lights. Durango with brake lights (eBay). Road Runner with front turn signals/running lights, rear running/brake lights, side markers, dome light, dash lights.

LEDtronics is one mfgr. Can't think of the others off the top of my (bald) head...

What others said is true; some LEDs are good, as far as light spread is concerned, others bite. May take several tries to get what you want. And the parts are easy to find to assemble your own board of LEDs, just time-consuming and tedious (I think) work. Ask Doug (72RoadRunnerGTX) about his LED map light; pretty slick - same concept, just not as many LEDs as taillights...

superbrightleds.com is another good source. For individual one off stuff, you can go to Radio Shack, and they will help you and tell you how to do it, but they have extremely high prices once you know what you need, and if you want to buy in bulk. By the way, to answer another question of yours, RED LEDs work best with RED lenses.

LED's will not outlast your car and you. They do and will fail. I have installed many LED traffic lights , LED emergency lights, newer LED flood lights and they fail one by one until they look kind of stupid with so many individual LED's in the array out. But when they are new they do catch the human eye.
Keep watching your local traffic lights and the individual failed LED's.

Good info to know, thanks. I thought the average life expectancy was supposed to be like 11 years or so, but I guess it depends on a lot of different factors. probably like my flourescent bulbs were suppossed to last 5 years (intermittant use). Some last i year, One I had in my bathroom, never turned off, always on lasted about 10 years.
