I see so many fender tags that are painted with one screw painted or both and the entire tag painted but the majority I see is both screws and vin painted. When I restored my car there were no evidence of the screws being painted nor the vin tag. I'm guessing it depended on the plant it came from but mine is a 70 lynch road car. I left the tag unpainted along with the screws.

Lynch Rd. tag is usually not painted , if yours was not then I would clear it and put it on that way .

John are you sure about that... I got beat up by an "expert" on fender tags on an A12 of all things and now that high ranking A12 has a painted fender tag, bent and one screw not painted . Funny thing was the tag was not painted or bent when the question was asked how it should be, go figure

That is how it is on the car right now plain and the screws unpainted. I have been told it was wrong but I know someone clarified it that it was that way on this board more than one person. Ok Paul J. chime in I know you know.

Well then you surely want to do what some pASSer by at a car show is telling you.

Not that I or any of the other members that have put alot of thought into this very subject are the final authority either.

I really don't know how to respond to something like that.

I know St. Louis left one screw in and bent up the tag for paint. Tags and one screw got painted, the other screw is not. Lynch Rd cars from what I understand had the tag hanging from the roof in the car while being painted, so I would guess the amount of paint if any would differ from car to car. Both screws would also be unpainted.

my 70 Lynch rd built car will not have the tag painted. it's been unpainted since 12/69 and will remain that way. I dont think clearing it is such a good idea. just clean it up and screw it down.

If the environment promotes surface rust I would clear it too. You can even buy rattle can FLAT clear that is really hard to visually detect.
And jeez, if you change your mind no big deal.

As stated, Lynch Rd tags were not painted on the fender, usually just a mist of paint at best. Here are 2 examples, 1 which shows quite a bit of overspray, the other almost none. Both 69 cars.

Thanks Paul for your input. If you look closely on the left hand side you can see alittle bit of the orange on my tag. Here is the engine bay

Thanks Paul, I’ve perpetuated or beat this Painted or Unpainted Lynch Road fender tag horse to death and then kept beating it for a couple of decades now and it was more for laughs for a long time. I thought at first it was just the A12 cars because my A12 (Lynch Road of course) fender tag was completely bare and someone back in the’90’s thought that was a trait of A12’s and pointed out that John Dal. /roadrunnerJD original black A12 had an unpainted fender tag. At first I thought it might have been because a new or second tag might have been made for the A12 package after the original and later found out that there were lots of original Lynch Road fender tags in ‘68/69 with little or no paint on them. More research and hundreds of fun posts on the “painted or unpainted fender tags” and we found out that Lynch Road cars had the tag hanging by a paperclip and some got lots of paint and most got overspray but one thing they DIDN’T get WAS BENT IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER with one screw left in (pun on the LEFT). So my new dig is “Bent or Unbent” Lynch Road fender tag?
You can find lots of Lynch Road fender tags that were painted or re-painted over the years but if someone didn’t bend them they were NOT bent at Lynch Road back in ‘68/’69.
Bent or Unbent Lynch Road fender tags…………………paint optional

Here's my A12 fender tag and there are two "telltales" on this beside the no paint on the tag, one is the lack of a bend crease in the upper left corner and the other is the inspector's sideways "X" on the left side that could not have been put there if the tag was screwed down by a left side fender tag screw.

Yep that's Y4 Spanish Gold
