My latest issue caused me to pull and open up my Chrysler electronic ignition distributor. What I found was heavy surface rust on the reluctor and on the tip of the coil pickup and even some on the springs. I replaced the pickup and rotor but I don't want my new set to get rusted too. What can I do to help prevent the surface rust inside of the dist and why is it there?

Thanks

(1) clean everything & coat the surfaces w WD40 or something similar and grease on the shaft w the spiral grooves and the plastic collar (bevel down) and the 3 nubs where the plates slide on each other, spray dry lube on the pins the weights slide onto plus the plate. (2) high humidity on the ferrous metal

It was a rust colored coating.

Thank you both for the replies.
