there is no secrets or easy way, it must slide forward a couple inches then out of there. you will have to move the pipe if its right under it or tight up to it. some of the cars with headers are a real nitemare to remove a starter on.

try to wiggle it forward enough to drop the back of it out the bottom.

I have a center dump manny on my MH 440

the pipes is very tight,it is a large PITA to get it out,but it will come out with a lot of curse words

you gotta pry it out or remove the head pipe from manny

mine also had a heat sheild on it with a large band clamp it will have to come off before the starter

now would be the time to upgrade to the mini starter...I used one from a 93-Dak 5.2 v-8

you can slide it right inthere and it only weighes 6 lbs or so

not 30 like the orignal one

I got a mini starter from the u-pull for 14$ and had it rebuilt for 65$2 yrs later

got another mini for the sb truck with headers for 14$ at the u-pull,it was a new one from napa and has been flawless for a yr now

newer ones have a plug for the relay wire, but the early ones have a plastic adaptor you remove and hook the stock starter wires to the studs direct

the mini starter will spin the 440 mucho faster also

FYI..I also went to a mini alt on the non a/c brackets, thats a bolt on as well, just need a longer bolt and spacer for it
