Anyone ever done any work on one to improve the flow or performance? Do you think there can be any improvement made and leave the exterior stock appearing? What seem to be the bottle neck that hinders the flow of these intakes? Thanks

I can't speak for all of them, but my '63 intake necked down real bad right at the port exit. I gasket matched it and just blended that into the runner. This is not an easy intake to get flow out of, and I didn't want to cut it up too much.

Have you access to any of the Old engine books..It lays out some mods for these intakes. If you want I can scan them for ya, and email them too you.
From what I have seen the mods are simple pop cycle stick dams and epoxy, mods to the divider walls etc.
All internal so you wont know it by looking at them.
There is a few people out there that can make these intakes a bunch better than factory thats for sure.
Looks like most no days that is doing class racing with maz wedge go with the indy bath tube intake. They run good, but dont have that look of a old factory intake.

Have done alot of work on them even tried cutting it open and redoing the runners. The floor design on that intake is not good and nothing improved it. Leave it alone. i had 5000. tied up in one and it only moved the powerband around no payday.

I think it was the "SHADOW WOODS" '63 Plymouth that did a lot of work on their's. They were the top dog in super/stock briefly(late 70s). Don't remember who did the intake. It was the same shop that modified the SS HEMI CROSSRAMS back then. I can dig out my old SUPER/STOCK & DRAG ILL.. if you want. Let me know with a pm..

Yes Tom Tiganeli use to work with diamond on the race hemi intakes and they tried the same thing with the max wedge intake. What they did was cut the intake at the interconnector and ported it bigger. Then either welded it up or made a small plate to cover it. You can do a prety good job of the same thing if you take the freeze plugs out and go in there with a long stem cutter and open it up some. It is suppose to help some. It is worth a try.

Marlin Bogner had this intake for sale many years ago. I think he said that Batten did it and the heads. I wanted to buy just the intake, but he wanted to sell as a package. I didn't have the cash to swing that deal.

Would you say these old original style intakes are more suited on the 3.75 stroke engines, or does the longer stroke engines amplify the top end asthma problems?
Seems hardly anyone is building stock stroke engine anymore, unless the class or rules dictate such changes....
I know were a complete setup is with carbs...Im sure they need rebuilt, and I dont think the linkage is there...But that is just a phone call away to places like A&A.
Which brings me to my next question, is the repop intakes any improvements over the stock piece?
I know the Mp Hemi X-Ram is a bit better than the originals.

Jake will back me up on this. Even the best modified cross ram isn't much better. Remember this intake was built for a 413 inch motor running 5500 rpm. Designed in 1961. Believe me if I could make one work I'd replace my Indy.

Correct me if I am wrong Doug, but arent you the gentleman who took off the stock piece, and added the Indy unit and picked up like over a half second?
IIRC AndyF done this swap on the dyno and found like 100hp or something..

Actually, it was closer to 80hp, but still...

I love the maxie cross ram and would love to have one on my '63....for looks alone.

The simple fact of the matter is they are a dated design that has long been passed up by single plane units and the Indy piece.

everyone above is right on the money...

Diamond-Elkins used to perform a maxi-interconnect where the center of the intake was cut out and raised for more plenum volume.

This mod is outlined in the old direct connection manuals. If your curious let me know I have one somewhere I can scan.

It helped.. didn't look remotely stock.

On a modern race motor or stroker it will be the restriction.

For a street car ..awesome

Doug and I both used the stock intakes on 500in.ers. We went fast at that time. Doug picked up a ton with the indy. The power level varies with the head flow and cam selection. I think with dougs combo they picked up 55hp???. I have sean as much as a100. I never dynoed Jim Wipples motor for a A-B test but he picked almost a 1/2 second. From 10.3's-9.8's. I went high 9.8's as an average with the best 9.68. So one could use that intake for that combo but there is allot of power over the stock intake with the indy. Mr.340 that looks almost exactly like mine did.

I think we picked up 80 hp switching to the Indy ram and then picked up another 20 hp when moving to a 440-3 intake with a Dominator.

That same basic short block and cylinder heads ended up going 800 hp after changing the valve train (solid roller, Jesel rocker arms, Jesel belt drive, etc). With the MW cross ram it was basically just a 600 hp motor but with a Super Victor intake and a solid roller it made 800 hp. The cam was fairly mild too so I'm sure there was more in it. The cam was only .400 lobe lift and 266 @ 050 duration.

My conclusion was that the MW cross ram just didn't work at all on my combination. Some guys have figured out how to make them run but my combo didn't work very well in comparison to the single 4bbl intakes I tried.

When I dynoed mine many years ago it made 55 hp over a stock cross ram. This was with box stock -1 Indys at 498ci. Also peak HP was at 5750rpm with the cross ram. It peaked at 6800 with the Indy. The Indy gained power from 4500 rpm up. I love the look of the cross ram and didn't run the Indy very long. Even in early testing shifting at the low cross ram rpm shift point it was worth .30 @ 3mph. The late Ron Eroh had one modified by Ray Barton. It ran in the 9.85-9.95 range way back. The bottom line is your trying to guzzle a beer thru a drink straw. My quest now is to make the Indy run as well as a single dominator

If the 8536 is the wide cap then no. You need the narrow cap or offset dist.
