727 trans with Cheeta manual rev pattern transbrake valve body and PPP Quick Shift shifter.

Trans was freshened and used to work OK.

Cable is adjusted in second so that it fits in perfectly and when cruising threw the pits it shifts fine into second, but at full throttle, i have to basically hit the shifter twice to get into second...

I lengthened the knob one the cable one turn out to push more forward into 2nd, but haven't tried it yet as car is track only.

Any ideas??

Cheers,

Arnie

Try the way I set my cable. Start in N and (leaving the cotter pin out) have someone shift thourgh all the gears checking each for free movement of the cable pin in the shiftter arm at each position. If the pin moves in and out freely and the arm doesn't pop when the pin is removed then you know it's proprely adjusted. If the pin is putting pressure on the arm and then the arm pops into place after the pin is removed it needs a little tweak. Sometimes a full turn is too much.

I go through checking each position a couple times before I install the cotter pin and call it good

Hey Ari,

PPP insists you use 2nd gear for their shifters...

Having said that, i did exactly what Wild Bill is saying and it fit in every gear cleanly, but did not find second easily under power.

I would suspect the trans more, but the 60 foot was great at 1.28 (best ever)and I went through the 1/8 mile traps in 2nd gear at 117mph for a 6 second ET.

I gave it one extra turn out and will try on Saturday, but am looking for ideas in case it still doesn't click nice into second...

Thanks Guys!

Arnie

Sounds like the linkage adjustment is off. Also make sure the cable is not in a hard bind/bend.

Take a good look at the cable routing when you put the trans back in the car. It could be binding with the engine torque movement. A partially melted cable can make it not move easily too, and could cause this.

Thanks guys,

I will take another look at cable routing.

I did reroute it from the last time i used this shifter, as the cable was melting the outside from the headers...

However it shifts fine when not running and checking the detents, so it is not noticeably sticky.

Like Jim said maybe the flex under power is affecting the cable??

I will try it again tommorow if the weather co-operates.

Cheers,

Arnie

Once, out of the blue, I had slip going into 3rd. This was with a T/A manual v/b, that had worked flawlessly for literally 2,000 passes. The front clutch discs were smoked. Upon teardown, since I didn't find anything wrong, I decided to "upgrade" from the narrow pump hsg bushing to the later style. 1st pass, same thing. Teardown, front clutch discs smoked again. Freshened it up, and installed my spare valve body out of fear, since the clearances, seals and parts looked perfect save for the burnt discs and plates. I religiously check cable and detent positions, and upon reinstallation of the trans, this time was no different. As I was going through the shifter positions, while laying on the floor, I reached up and slapped the shifter into third. I then pulled the cable out of the lever, and the lever snapped back into the detent. Hmm.. I found that the internal detent plate in the shifter had a hair line crack, and moving the lever normally, it worked fine. However, if the movement was abrupt, it spread the plate, not allowing the cable to move the manual lever fully into third. Sorry for the long speil, no other way to fully explain it. My point: CHECK THE SHIFTER.
