What can be done to restore a 69 charger fuel filler tube?

Aside from painting them, not much. They were a lead-tin type of plating which no one seems to do anymore. I have a spare if you are looking to buy one.

Rub it down with fine steel wull if it's not too bad. That's about it. Painting it won't look right.

If it's rusty and OK inside, what about using eastwoods "Tank Tone" paint on it?

I had mine powder coated and it just does not seem right. I will post a pic. PM me on your spare one as I am interested.

Ive tried the tank tone before I ended up getting a third good one. The one that I had painted with Tank Tone from Eastwood did not have anywhere close to the original appearance. The original one in my car I replaced due to some small dents that were on the underside of the tube that I could not live with. I found a really nice mint one that had some rust on it that I was able to clean off but left dark spots but that was not too bad for me since the lead-tin plating had light and dark areas.

NitrousN, you have a PM.

A friend did his in HAMMERTONE, and I think it would be the closet to the lead-tin plating that your going to get in a paint.

I just did one yesterday in eastwoods tank tone and I'm not impressed. It just looks like dull silver paint.
I'm gonna try the hammertone finish today and go from there.

That zinc one looks really good. I never thought of that. I think that is a really good alternative. It doesn't look stock but it does look a lot nicer than paint.

Bill,
If you use the Hammertone, you have to play with it by varying the spray pattern distance and angles to get it looking NOT like a paint, which is uniform in appearance.

I went the zinc plating route as well. Most of mine is hidden (68 RR) unlike yours. That galvanized finish is tough to duplicate.

Well,'
I did the hammetone paint this week. and I have to admit , I like the look. So much I did the license plate support as well.
Keeping in mind, Obviously it's no where near OE correct. But this car will never be judged on a national stage. It'll be driven WAY to much to be trying for $3 trophies.

"That galvanized finish is tough to duplicate."
It's actually lead dipped.
I have been looking for years for a shop to do this.
All say it is a health hazard procedure.

Are there different types of lead dip??. I may have a shop that will do it, but I would like to know for sure I am asking for the right type of finish that will duplicate the factory.

Tank tone from Eastwood doesn't look good on anything! You can have my extra cans. I've used it on my new gas tank and it looks just like someone sprayed dull silver on the gas tank. I ended up using a satin clearcoat paint.

I really don't know.
I do know that you can rub away or melt away the lead on these filler tubes quite easily.
I don't know the chemical make up of it.

Somewhere on the A12 board, there was a member who had restored their filler neck and it looked fantastic.

I couldn't find the thread, but its maybe 18 months old at most.

If I recall, they used some eastwood tinning/lead on the outside and then painted some glyptol red/black on the ends. This was what they had found on a few survivor cars.

FOUND IT!

Sorry, I still like the the Tank Tone paint better. At least it doesn't look like paint when applied. Don't care for the glossy finish and I bet it won't last long.

I'm with Bill, I used the Hammertone 5 years ago on my tank & it still looks the same. Durability is not an issue.

Tank tome is too dull, tanks are a bit shiny without any paint so the Hammertone is more correct in my book.
