Started mocking up TTI exhaust on the above car yesterday. Instructions say that on "some cars due to wheelbase differences", shortening the x-pipe may be required. TTI headers and 3" exhaust with Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers (the recommended muffler for this system). (400 block, if it matters.) Installed per the instructions, from rear forward. Anybody else done this setup? It looks like about 2-3 inches need to be trimmed off the x-pipe. Can it be done off the end or does the shortening need to be done by cutting and welding where the x-pipe sections are straight back before they turn into the mufflers?

Sorry for the long post. As always, TIA,
Marq

Do you have the very small numbers lined up with each other that are on each pipe?

I was able to assemble mine and it fit but not real well. Then I noticed the numbers and I had it togeather wrong. Once I got all the nunbers matched up, it fit like a glove with no cutting required.

Cutting would be shortening the end of the pies , fit the X pipe to the front and figure out which end needs to be trimmed.

You will be hours ahead if you make the section between your headers(??) and the mufflers removable in case you need to do transmission work in the future .

Marq,
I had to take an inch or two off the rear of the x-pipe to get the muffler hangers to correctly line up. Sounds like you are running the same system as I am. Also needed to shorten up to forward end of the tail pipes to clear the axle. I just assumed the pipes were designed to accommodate slightly shorter mufflers as well as the DST’s.

Thanks for the replies. I will double-check the number stampings when I get home. Also mock up the header-to-x-pipe sections by themselves, just to see how that fits. Right now, the mufflers sit pretty nicely in the floor cavities with the tailpipes' peaks right over the top of the axle. But the tailpipes are bottomed in the muffler outlets - no more rear movement possible with the muffs.

One more Q: Right now the rear is hanging on the shocks (KYBs, if it matters), as the car is on jackstands. As far as proximity to the driveline, how close should/could the pipes be to the driveline?

Thanks again,
Marq

After mocking it up, I noticed that I have a TON of clearance between the turn pipes (between collectors and x-pipe) and the trans x-member. Looking at your pic, I notice it has quite the clearance also. I just wanted to make sure that this is the way it's supposed to be, not some weird situation. Looks like they could have been tucked up tighter. But maybe that's what they look like with the Tremec trans in there. The trans tailshaft housing is durn near touching the trans x-member (1/4" clearance maybe), so I can't get it much higher. Is this pretty typical?

On another note, I did shorten the outlets of the x-pipe by 1 inch. Fits together much better, but still not quite perfect. I may have to shorten the inlets to the tailpipes by an inch or maybe a 1/2 inch.
