Uh Oh, broke a hinge! #723140

broke the top door side hinge ear on the right lower door hinge on my '50 truck. should i weld it back on or is there a source for new? Roberts does not list them.

Might be able to buy a used hinge, but it would be doubtful if new ones still existed, unless the guy over at www.vintagepowerwagons.com (think thats the web site). Gene

the hinge should be steel. look at the break. if it's steel, it will be a fairly clean break, with possibly a rust stain ,indicating a previous crack. if it's iron, it will have lots of small "holes" or pits, showing the grain structure of the casting.

The hinge would be steel. Cast iron would never take the stress and vibration of a door hinge. Might be a nice forged steel piece, haven't seen many hinges broken. Many with the pins frozen, or the holes worn over sized, but few broken. I've welded up a few so we could re-drill the pin holes, they weld up nicely unless they are rust pitted badly. Gene
