The wife is thinking about replacing her Hemi Durango with a Jeep Grand Cherokee, which I'm fine with except that it's hard to find a used Hemi Jeep. There are a ton of 4.7 liter V-8 Jeep's running around but I'm worried whether I could tow my open trailer and car behind it like I do with her current Durango.

Anyone have experience with towing behind a 4.7 liter Jeep?

All I can tell you is I towed open trailers with durango and dakota 4x4's , still have the dakota, with 4.7's and they did pretty well. Alot of towing, I'd get a bigger truck and a bigger engine.

The 4.7 is fine for light towing but the short WB of the Grand is not the best I love the wifes 2001 Grand Cherokee 4.7 though--we get 20 mPG and it is very peppy--No room up front for guys---the window controls etc stick out from the door too much and the footwell is very narrow--

Have a 2007 Grand with 4.7 and the towing package, not towing, but putting my foot in it from elevations of 5,000 to 10,000 feet in the summer the cooling system is marginal, twin electric fans and big clutch fan roaring like a P-51 fighter. No way would I atempt to tow at elevation with this setup.

My wifes '99 Grand just past 200K miles and I've done some short trip with over 4000 pounds on an open car trailer. It's amazing how well the 4.7 pulls. If you take any long hauls, I'd get something with a longer WB. Added bonus, it's a blast offroad!

I have a 2008 with the 4.7L. It tows my boat, or a car on a open trailer very well. I have the factory towing package as well. Keep in mind they made major changes to the 4.7L starting with the 2008 model year that bumped it up to 305hp. I towed my boat from the San Francisco area up to the Spokane area last summer and got 16.5mpg for the drive which blew me away. I give it

We had asimilar mileage and experience with our 08 Commander. No problem taking the Bee to the Nats. 16+ MPG cruise, air, and a kick-en myGIG blasting out some AC/DC and Maiden...its the only way to go!

I'm not looking to tow very much as my local track is only 20 miles away (and flat) and about half the time I just drive the car itself. The only real trip is 150 miles to the Mopar Nats each August.

All I'm really hoping is that the Jeep could handle it I had to tow with it.

I have the 4.7 in my 2007 Dakota. Mine is the high output, but it has plenty of torque for towing. I had a 2001 Dakota with the 4.7, also. It was also good with towing. That was my first contact with the 4.7, and I have been more than satisfied.

I used a Grand Cherokee 4.7 to tow an open trailer. Power was fine. For more than occasional use I'd get a weight distributing hitch to help out with tongue weight and the short wheelbase.
