I just saw the 408 give a way Carlisle engine in the latest Mopar Muscle, and it appears that they used a later Magnum 5.9 360 so they could run a roller cam, but it looks like they used LA style, RHS heads and valvetrain.

Can you use a newer magnum block and just bolt on old LA heads and intake? I know magnums oil the rockers through pushrods and LA's dont, so how would this work? Would you use the magnum block and everything else from an LA motor. Or are other mods nessasary?

Just curious cause I'm planning on a stroker build and would love to use a magnum block for the option of a roller cam(without the high cost of retro lifters), but I already have a ton of LA parts, heads, intake, valve covers, ect.

if you drill the block for the oil passage to the heads it would work

318 went roller in 85-up 360 went roller 89 up to the magnum in 92,some early magnum blocks are drilled for the LA style oiling but the head blocks the passage at the head gasket

so they may have had an early 92-93 mag block to start with..you could use it

or

best bet is to get an 89 pre-mag tbi 360 engine for roller block to use your LA stuff on it

i have a stock 88-360 headed 318 cop engine that was roller block but with a flat tappet cam

the 1990 318 engine I got the roller gear from oiled both ways

thru the roller lifters and hollow PRs...and thru the block/heads to the rocker shafts

so when I went roller cam in the cop engine it now oils both ways

early 85 carbed 318 roller lifters are not oil-thru lifters, they went to oil thru rollers when they all went tbi,IIRC,and started tooling up for magnum engines in 92

I think the mag roller lifter will work in the pre-mag blocks as well( i have not got a hold of a set yet to see for myself)

so pick you pre-mag rollers carefully if you need oilers and hollow rods

if you want a mech FP on it,make sure to order your roller cam with the long nose on it for the FP ecentric

any of the stock roller lifters will work in a roller block with any of the "retro" cams

FYI..

I use a lunati voodoo 60710 roller cam

the comp 901-16 springs cover all the lunati sb cams, flat or rollers, single with damper, drop on with stock seals...lunati springs are doubles with damper, need machine work,PC seals to go on sb heads

You can drill horizontally into the rear of LA heads then angle up to the rear pedestal. (drill the angle passage from the top). Tap into the NPT capped passage at the rear of the block by the sending unit.

Wow Scratchn, thats alot of great info
So I'd look for an 85-91 318 with TBI or an 89-91 360 with TBI, or posibly an early magnum block but only if inspected and is drilled for rocker oiling. And I have a set of 901 Comp springs sitting in a box so thanks for the tip on the Voodoo cams. Thanks!!!!

my last pre-mag roller 360 was stock bottom with a set of 318 #302 close chamber heads

great little torque monster in a 2x truck

used the stock tbi cam with a LD4B intake and 600 eddy carb, headers, stock high stall TC a999 tranz,3.55sg

not a high rev race engine but had some nice torque and bottom end for towing
