So I finally got my motor back in and running, now that I figured out the electronic ignition wiring! I am still working out some of the bugs. I put on a new alternator and it appears that it is working but I am not charging the battery. I am assuming that I have either the wrong wire or am missing a wire for the alternator. I guess I should have marked some of the wires when I took the motor out 2 years ago! I really didn't think it was going to take this long. Any suggestions?

Did you upgrade to the dual external field hook up alternator system or are you still using the single external field with an internally grounded field system (OEM for that era)

It is the dual field alternator.

What are the field wires hooked up to? 68 wiring only has one field wire...

Previous posts on this subject have said to simply ground one of the two fields and it will charge properly.

68 is 1 feild wire

ground the 2nd wire and it works

should also upgrade to the elect solid state voltage regulator replacement they now have for the old points style VR..very good upgrade..even with the single feild wire alt

Thanks for all the info guys! I talked to my parts guy and I probably got the wrong alt. It is the one they listed for my car, but the replacement that came in for it only has 1 field terminal. Since I can't get it until Monday I am going to try grounding the other field terminal and see what happens. Thanks again! Great forum!

I did run a ground to the other field terminal on the alternator and now it charges great!
