Having a tough time in finding a steering gear box locally for my 72 charger, they have them for a 73 all day long. will a 73 fit in my 72?

Yes it will physically fit , but you may need a new pitamn arm , more than likely you will , the size of the output sector gear changed for most of the model line with the 73 model year. It should be an easy switch over on a B body requiring only the pitman arm ... but I could be wrong on ONLY the pitman arm .

You will not find a 72 down size box unless you get REAL lucky ...

The steering chuck, whether power or manual physically interchange for many many years. I put a Diplomat Cop car chuck in my 74 Duster. The pitman arms may have to change in your case.

Different part numbers and it looks like the spline for the pitman arm is bigger on the 73. You might be able to swap arms but Rockauto has both years.

I just checked with Rockauto they said i have to ship my unit to them and they ship it to get repaired. dont want to go this route. Napa here has a 73 in stock, hence no shipping charges, I'll go buy it with a new pitman arm and try it.
