The car;68 Newport 4400 pounds Engine; 383 .040 over,9.5:1 flat top pistons,268H comp cam,750 CFM carb,HP logs,TTi 2.5" exhaust,2.94 gears (3.23's in the future) 2157514 tires 26.74 inches tall (eventually getting 2357015 28.0 tall) Trans rebuilt 727 with modern part throttle 3-2 kickdown. Will be using an external trans cooler with the 26" rad and 18" clutch fan and shroud.
The question; Which would be the best matched convertor for my combo??
The car will be driven often in town and highway with the few arm drop races and the typical stop light action. She's gonna be a driver. The ones I have my eye on is the Mancini one good for 2200-2500 stall. and the Mopar 166K good for 2250-2350 stall. Is this too much or not enough stall?
The motor and trans are out and not together yet. I want to do this match up once and bee done with it. Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

Fortunately the stall you are looking for is not expensive. My advice is to stay away from Brands like TCI, Alabama and even B&M. You do have a heavy car so stay away from the lighter duty converters from the good manufacturers as well. (B&M and Hughes have a line less expensive converters for mopars but they clearly state that they are not for big blocks- and Id imagine heavy cars as well) With that said Turbo Action and Hughes are 2 brands that have a good rep.
Keep old mopars alive.

I have never seen Hughes claim their converters are not for big blocks. I ran a Hughes Street Master 2500 behind my 383 in my Coronet. It performed exactly as it should. Stalled at 2500 RPM's, but acted like a stock converter at light throttle. Also, Hughes Performance has excellent service as are their convters.

I called Hughes and I have the 24TOW convertor on order. With my car's heft, cam and gear combo they say it helps multiply torque at the bottom for better acceleration plus act normal during highway driving with no slip. Stall is around 300-400 above stock and that is fine for my application and driving I plan on doing since I will not be racing the car.
