My 2001 T&C had a check engine light.

I took it to a very trusted mechanic.

The code was for the fan relay, he checked it, it was shorted. he replaced it but the code was still there and the fans did not come on.

He spent a couple days checking all of the circuts, grounds, relays, senders, etc.. and determined the PCU had an open circut in it.

He estimated replacing the PCU would be $1200 and that a used one would be more trouble than it's worth.

His plan B is to hard wire in a temp sender to the fan relay. Is there any down side to plan B?

The van has 168K, a new compressor, evaperator, condenser and trans in the last 20K (2 years). I really want to get the full goody out of the trans.

there are no downsides to plan B. I'd let him do it before the motor is toasted. it'll be just fine as long as he wires in a coolant sensor. without the sensor, the motor would run too cool, and lose mileage.

I've been seeing alot of weird issues with the mopar minivans. We've found the problems are in the relay, fuse boxes under the hood next to the driver's fender. I've seen them with all kinds of different issues. The latest was a trans. issue that would leave the trans. in limp mode. After rebuilding the trans, with all new electronics. Replaced the fuse box and problem gone. Seems they are corroding on the inside out. Try it.

Should he replace the fuse box itself?

He has replaced the relay.

Thanks

I've also heard in the last week of another minivan that needed a new fuse box.

The pcu is placed in the worst spot possible. We just replaced the one in our van. We bought a used one and no problems yet. The price for the pcu is double what I can get and was quoted by our mechanics. If You want to get a new one I will help you out.
