650 for good street/mileage manners, 800 for more performance with minor mods (cam, intake, exhaust).
Save compression for a toss-up choice (mileage vs.
power), depending on the pump gas.

Not too big of an upgrade, Saves you a few pounds
over the iron manifold. I believe the 69' RR
came through with 650 Carter AVS's, sort of like
the AFB, but the primary barrels are SLIGHTLY smaller than the secondary barrels. Not to be confused with the Carter Thermoquad!! All in all,
an easy carb to tune and maintain. A good rebuild/
jetting adjustment (for todays crappy gas) and some ignition timing changes, you're off and runnin'!!!

Squarebores & spreadbores react totally different from one another, so they can't be compaired as equals when your talking CFM, its apples too oranges, you can always get away with a larger CFM carb on a given app. if useing a spreadbore over a squarebore, i'm just talking vacuum controlled units, not DPers.

People tend to overcarb. My 340 ET's best with a 650 Holley.

I can say you can make a big mistake between a secondary vacuums or double pumper on an engine, but I don't think really between spreadbore or squarebore, or sequential over simultaneous... differences ? yes, they get diff responses ones over the others, then the quality of the piece and you must match the response you want with cam and timming, but not that big I think to "overcarb" just with CFM spec... I'm just being logical, not talking about the experience of course.

we got also 6packs on 340s ( 1000 cfms ), true just the center is the pumper

650

ET wise I'd be willing to bet you could get more out of the 800 - but thats not your goal so 650 is your best bet!

Keep in mind boys and girls that the Thermoquads, Quadrajet, and AVS adjust their CFM's according to engine demand. That is why you can run those big carbs on little engines. Holleys don't do that.

True. BUT, you would have to improve the breathing
habits of the motor (headwork, headers, cam and intake).

Six packs are an example too.
Carters are more forgiving then mechanical
secondary Holleys. Although, the kick off the
line will be stronger with the DP. Vac sec Holleys
run strong too, if set right. AVS carbs are almost
foolproof.
