did a 35 mile ride last night, 55-70 mph most of the way.
was maybe 80 degrees outside
running 200 degree on temps
scared this is issue

some feel it is fine for BB ,
only 700 miles on the motor
what do you think??

Keep driving it. Mine was around 200*-210* last night it's always run hot in hot/humid weather I'm trying to rectify a lean condition but I don't think 200* is too hot.

i assume a stock water pump what are you using for a radiator/fan and thermostat?

Me too. Its 85 deg outside today, highway running the 440 at around 60-65 steady. Temp between 200-205. The coolant is fresh. Stock water pump, fan and radiator, no shroud.

Was wondering if an additive like water wetter would be helpful. Or would a fan shroud be a better fix.

Shroud would help bring the temp down.

shroud will do nada at highway speed...the rad gets full cooling air at highway speeds..the shroud helps the fan pull air at low speeds....200 at highway speeds means the rad is not efficient enough...

It still helps control air flow at highway speed which does help in cooling.

have Mopar hemi waterpump,
Mopar 71 BB hi flow radiator, shroud and Mopar clutch fan .
I am throwing a bottle of Water wetter in tomorrow , Cant hurt.
I am thinking to get a good aftermarket coolant gauge . So I know if correct reading.
I do not not enough money to have my radiator redone by Glen Ray. That will be some other year.

will putting a trans cooler help?

200 is perfectly normal.

I don't know why people get worried about it.

While I agree a shroud only helps with low speed cooling, once you hit 30mph or so the cooling is all air flow from moving, not from the fan.

Showing 200 on the gauge while on the highway is to be expected if you're running a 195 t-stat. Now if he was running a 180 t-stat and doing 200 on the highway, then I would say your cooling system does need some attention.

BobN, what temp rating of t-stat are you using?

And yes the redline water wetter does help, I've used it.

180 SuperStat. Purple Ice. All else stock. No high-flow. 200 is fine. Ambient makes huge difference. Mine runs 170 in San Jose. In August in Reno elevation runs up to 212. Aftermarket gauge and laser thermometer to be sure.

200 is fine. I use WW and it works well. I don't use anti-freeze. Last year car barley got over 190 ever. I broke the new engine in Friday, stayed right at 180 the entire 25 minutes. And it doesn't make a mess like the green stuff.

Your thermostat only regulates the minimum temperature, not the maximum.

If an engine runs down the highway at 200 degrees with a 195 thermostat, then it will run down the highway at 200 degrees with a 160 thermostat. At best a lower rated thermostat will just delay the amount of time it takes to get to the system operating temperature.

The only time a thermostat will affect maximum temps (assuming no failure mode) is if the thermostat is artificially keeping the minimum system temperature above it's normal operating temperature.

I use a 160 stat and I run from 170 to about 185 on the highway on very hot day. What I did not like was stuck in traffic it would creep up to 200 and I dont have a shroud right now. So I decided to try this electic fan along with my stock fan and it did the trick. I have it on a toggle switch and I only turn it on when stuck in traffic and it brings it right back down to 180. I had the same problem with my 64 300. Once I found a shroud the problem was fixed. Finding the shroud was fun, ended up putting a radiator from a 69 Imperial in and a bud of mine happened to see the shroud hanging on the wall of some boneard he was visiting and called me. Heck of an eye to see that.
