Hi all, have noticed i've a leaking rear axle seal on my 8 3/4 so i pulled the axle out. Now i not sure as i'm new to mopars but i believe i have the green bearing set up. There is no adjusters just axle seal, bearing retainer, tapered bearing. My question is do you use hi-temp bearing grease to pack the bearing and do you usually use some loctite bearing mount to keep the outer race from turning. It dose'nt appear to have had loctite before so could someone steer me in the right direction. Thanks.

If you have a tapered wheel bearing, then they are the stock design, NOT the Green design. I am guessing that since you found NO adjuster, you pulled the left side? The adjuster is on the right. The Greens are sealed and cannot be serviced like the tapered ones. If they are leaking it means the shell has split somewhere and should be replaced immediately.
If the bearings ARE the stock tapered design, I cram thick bearing grease into the rollers before putting the axle back in. Of course if there was a leak going on, you should replace the inner oil seal first.

Thanks Frankenduster for the clear up and yes it is the left side. By the shell you mean the outer part of the bearing? Do you use loctite or similar to retain the shell?

No on the locktite. I guess it wouldnt hurt, but I havent used it there.
The outer shell of the tapered bearing assembly is what centers and locates the axleshaft in the housing. It is an interference fit. You can pull the outer shell away from the bearing about 3/16" and shove grease in. try to spin the bearing and get grease all around. Sure, it will do that on its own when you drive it, but doing it by hand will assure that you get as much grease in there as the bearing will hold.

with every thing said above

i use a greese gun with a greese needle in it to get inbetween the rollers good

after you do the left side might want to go ahead and re-pack the right side as well with the left axle out

installe the left side with the right side out

back the adjuster off some and install the right side

run adjuster in to set endplay...done

if its not had a oil change and is low might think about draining it while both axle are out

just back the 10 bolts off to the ends of the studs and pry the chunk out some and dump the fluid or drop it out and clean the housing out with a rag

after its drained, clean flange/chunk with some brake clean and use some rtv on the gasket flange and pop it back in then axle and endplay(I use thin coat of rtv on the lower 1/2 of the flange were the oil sits myself)

easy-er said than done no doubt, but thats why most ginny 8 3/4 have slopy end play and 30 yr old oil in them, not the fastest/ez-est to service

good luck

Make sure to replace the inner axle seal. That is the reason that you had the leak in the first place. very easy to pop out and to drive in straight. drive in all the way to the lip stop in the housing making sure that it is straight.

Thanks for all the input. I'll replace the inner seal and repack the bearings on both side's while i'm at it. Thanks again.

If you are new to Mopars and the 8 3/4 diff. you
want to look inside the axle housing to make
sure the center spacer is still in place. IF
you are working on a early Sure-grip.

Just a reminder, Axle bearings on the outside ARE NOT LUBRICATED BY DIFF GREASE! You must grease them.
