Looking at buying a Hemi car and I want to know what kind of limits I have as far as power. It has a Mopar Performance block, Mopar Performance aluminum heads, Eagle 4.150 stroker crank, Manley 6.965 rods, JE custom pistons, Comp Cams- 24-000-9 Hemi Roller, Comp Cams 929-16 Springs, Comp Cams 8921-16 Roller Lifters.

What is the max I can expect from these heads? Will the bottom end support 1200hp? Any input greatly appreciated. This is my first foray into the Hemi world and want to make sure I'm jumping in with a decent foundation.

Step back and reflect for a moment, the answer is obivious.

Ok, I'm assuming you are meaning it won't then? The engine was built by Wheeler Racing engines in MN for NOS. If it was as simple as "reflecting", I wouldn't have posted. Like I said, I have no experience with Hemi's other than drooling about them, lol. Just wanted some advice from those "in the know". Thanks.

Don't know the compression yet. I will be speaking to Wheeler today to get the skinny on the engine. Total cubes on the engine is 472, but I don't know what the final bore is. Thanks for the input. The guy I'm getting it from has never run the engine since it was built, but says Wheeler told him the bottom end would handle 1200hp, which is why I put this out there. I'm building this car to start out in a 6.0 class (1/8 mi), then move up later.

The block can handle the hp, but I'd be a little concerned with the crank and possibly the rods @1200 hp. Not that there hasn't been 1000hp+ engines with Eagle cranks, I just don't personally like to run them at that hp level. I've seen lots of 800+ hp engines with the Manley rods, but never in a 1200hp application. I believe Manley rates there race rod to 1000hp, unless that's changed. I'm with Chris that n/a you have around a 850hp +/- assuming the heads are ported correctly and it has enough compression and a decent induction system.

1200hp is a lot of power and demands good stuff to live. I wouldn't have any problem running your engine n/a the way it is, but if you're hanging a 400hp fogger on it, who knows how long it will live. Either way, best of luck and keep us posted on how it goes.

To reflect is get more information than you have provided.Nothing supports the notion of handling 1200 hp,are you turbocharging, supercharging or adding a 400/500 NOS kit of some sort? The block prepared correctly will probably handle that kind of hp.The heads depend on the valve train componants used and having the correct cam for the induction and compression. The 4.15 Eagle crank handling that hp,maybe, but do you want to risk that kind of investment? That question is best put to your engine builder and his confidence and knowledge.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've been talking all morning with the original engine builder as well as my builder. This motor was originally built as a pump gas street motor, so instead of nitrous, we are thinking along the lines of a blower due to the motor already being low compression. LOL, either that, or find someone with a race hemi that wants a streetable one to trade.

you won't have to worry one bit about the power.
you'll never even get close to 1200 hp in unless it's with a blower or turbo. 800-850 is about all it will make

I would be concerned that those heads don't have trouble with the seats falling out. There been a rash of that happening around here.

Definitely will have to check that out. Thanks for the "heads" up, lol.

Pump gas and turbo/ super charger compression are two different things. NOS would work better with pump gas compression then high compression. Did the builder give you an actual compresson on the motor?

Running a 6.0 class successfully will have at least as much to do with the weight of the car, its drive train and its suspension as it does with the engine's output. Depending on those factors, it may not take 1,200 hp. This seems a little like the tail wagging the dog in that I would think that you would need to know the weight of the car in order to start figuring the hp level it would take to put that particular car in the high 5s.

Master, again and still

You can make 900hp with the MP heads and correct port work. Modern Cylinder head built A 572 Hemi with 15:1 compression MP heads with this port work and made 780lb-ft and 920hp peak tq at about 5500 and peak hp about 7000. This was with fully ported MP Cross Ram and 950 HP carbs.
Chip on this board has a 3800 lbs street trim Cuda running pump gas and these same heads runs 9.50's in the 1/4.
Here is some flow data from my heads.
These are the newer Edelbrock castings, and you not need to worry about quality issue's like the older stuff, but they need checked out anyways.
