Pulled my 446" out of my challenger to take a peak inside and change the oil pan.

I pulled the pan and was looking at the cylidners and theres a good amount of scuffing on the cylinder walls right where the skirt is lonnger on the piston. This is a .030 440 with ross 82008's. What causes this/ is it normal?

Yep... dirt... could have even been in there when
you did the engine

Will also depend on piston to wall clearance , short stroker pistons are prone to this (rock).

Racing an engine that has not been properly warmed up can cause scuffing as well

I've noticed that Ross skirts always seem scuffed no matter what the use. Not sure why, just been my experience.

I believe someone else on here made a similar comment recently. They certainly do seem to have some thin skirts compared to other aftermarket pistons I've seen.

(I have made those comments before) I have built and dynoed tested a lot of motors with Ross pistons, it seems to me that they have delicate skirts, mark up very quickly and do mark the cylinder walls up some in the break in process also I'm now using Diamond brand pistons for those reasons

chamfering the bottoms of the bores with a grinder to take off the sharpness helps to prevent piston scuffing.

15 runs with Ross pistons & i had very noticable scratch marks. the sharp edge of the bottom of the bore was scouring my pistons draging crap up for the piston to scratch on it's way down on a compression stroke. chamfered the lower boere lip & my KB pistons look great & so does my bore.
