so here's the deal I have a (new) 1998 muscle motors 493 stroker kit that I plan to put together soon for my race truck, and the pistons have a .070 dome and we figure that the engine will have around 12.6 compression which translates to RACE gas only. now I don't plan to drive this truck to much on the street but we do have a cruise nite about 3mi from me so some street driving probably will happen. so should I just put it together and just step up for the race gas and limit street use? or get some new pistons(10.5 to 1) and rebalance and sell the ross domed ones? or cut off the .070 dome and get them balanced again? Ron...

Just run the domes. 99.9% of any of the modern dome pistons cant be milled off. They are hollow which makes good sense to save weight etc. Those old solid dome TRW's was thick enough to take a chain saw too and still be tough enough to run a 100 lb bottle of NOS through too If your really wanting to get away from race fuel the only way is a piston swap. I set of super thick head gaskets might be half the answer your looking for. Just keep a 5 gallon jug on hand and mix it with High test pump in like a 4:1 ratio deal. Even with 12.7:1 I would NOT be looking at running straight racing fuel anyways. Just really depends on what cam you currently have, what pump octane is available in your area vs what race fuel is available too. just some

Is E85 available in your area? That would solve the problem right there.
Kevin
I think there is a station in Oceanside(30 miles? away)that has it.
I don't have a cam picked out yet and pump gas here is 91 octane.
and I don't know what they sell at the track yet, i haven't had to buy any race gas in like 20 years.
this will be the newest, largest, highest compression engine I have ever had. all I have had in the past were junkyard 440's with a big hyd cam, so this will be WAY different for me Ron...

Is it going to have quench? Aluminum heads, quench, the right cam & you might be closer than you think... You'll still have to blend but not much...

More cam might help kill cylinder pressure & low rpm torque which with a 500" stroker just kills tires anyway..
what do you think would be a good cam? I have 1.6 roller rockers
I'd spend some time with a dynamic C/R calculator like http://www.wallaceracing.com/dynamic-cr.php And try to find a cam that gives you around 175 PSI cranking pressure & a dynamic C/R around 8.5.. at 12.6 static C/R you won't get there but the closer you get the better off you'll be
