I am working on upgrading my ignition and am looking at the MSD 6AL-2.

The instructions say not to use a digital or dial back timing light. Seeing as the only timing light I have is a Craftsman Dial Back has been around since the dawn of time. It may be time for me to upgrade.

What do you guys use with you multi spark ignition?

I bougt a Flaming River brand single wire battery powered timing light to use on the MSD BTW, I have used non dial back Craftsman and the Penske brand non dial back when Sears carried them, burnt them rascals up using the the old 404c and 404B and agin on the first generation MSD7 non A and non AL2 I do have two older(ten yrs+)Craftsman dial back timing lights with the cords that unplug that have survived numerous uses on a MSD7C and a MSD 404C(Mopar factory ignition plugin compatable)

I have a dial back and non dial back craftsman...the dial back doesn't read right with the msd...but the regular one works great with my digital 6+.

There was an article in one of the mags several years back about this. They tested numerous diff lights, some dialback, some non-dialback, and if I remember right, the el cheapo non-dialback light did the best. The dialback lights wouldnt stay steady for whatever reason, and I found that to be true with my Sears dialback light. Just used my Dad's old non-dialback after that.

I use a Sears dial back with a MSD 6AL with no problems even check it back to back with a elcepo and got the exact same readings with both lights.

Same one here... best light I have used and I have a
few of them... MSD can be touchy due to its multi
spark under 3000 rpm.... plus the Flaming River uses
the 2 D-cell you dont need the power hook up which
is easier and faster

I think that light is made by Ferret Instruments. The Ferret 80 looks the same and has the same features, just not red. Google is your friend. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&a...amp;safe=images
You will find it for less than $80. They also make several other models with or without dialback. Some have a tach built in. Some are rechargeable single wire units. The higher end models have red housings just like the MSD. The Ferret 80 is the cheapest, the others are obviously priceier.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

That light looks just like my Ferret from the 90s, still works great today.

I have the 6-AL 2 programmable, and have used the craftsman dial back, craftsman non dial back, and the flaming river, they all read exactly the same.

The MSD drove my Sears dialback nuts. I got the battery powered flaming river and it works great.

A friend of mine bought the most expensive one that AutoZone sells. That's what I use (I think I've had it in my possession longer than he has). In general, I don't know how good it is, but my MSD doesn't seem to mess it up at all. I should probably check it with known-good light just to make sure. But it runs well, I sent the initial with the vacuum method, and it seems to run just fine.

I have the blue point version of this light and love it, been using it for years as my go-to since it's 1 wire, but I can attest it does work well with my set up. (6al and now digital-6)

I also have a MAC dial back light that I use for when I want to dial in total advance and a couple craftsman el-cheapos to check against and all are accurate to each other.

I use a snap-on dial back and a mac tools dial back. Both work fine as long as i power them from a jump box. Hook them to the car and they go batty.
