so, i have an opportunity to pick up a '78 motorhome with a 440 and a "bad transmission". supposedly it goes but slips, i haven't gotten all the details. this rig is free to me if i head up to nor cal and fix the trans.

my question is... will any rebuild kit and parts for a 1978-era torqueflite work in a motorhome model or are there any specific pieces i'd need. hoping for no broken hard parts and new clutches/bands/seals will fix it. i'm planning to head up there next weekend with tools in hand so any tips would be welcome.

thanks

may be a short shaft with a bolt on yoke

but the same inside as any other 727...just not the out put shaft

I have a 78 440/short 727 also

good luck with it

Some of the larger coaches had a parking brake drum on the end of the transmission. Don't worry if you run across something along those lines. It doesn't change anything inside.

With the exception of a different output shaft seal and of course the bearing..

CROSS yerr fingers .. it COULD BE as simple as toasted fluid and the filter is just glazed-over.

SEEN THAT a bunch of times over-the-years.

I got one out of a friends motor home 440 and tranny and it had the short output with U joint. I found a output shaft and tail stock and it is now in a friends gasser.
And I just got another one (440 and 727)out of a 78 motor home
and it is standard non lock up regular output 727 fluid is fine so?? anyway the rebuild kit for I think 71 and up.
some guys use the stronger short shaft running a u joint at the front and a truck like slip drive shaft. at the rear U joint
they say it's much stronger??

on stronger

I ran a sb short shaft in my 68 Dart and have one in my 88 440 truck now

had a few in the club cab truck also

well cant realy say stronger, just they held up better to me

4500rpm N drops will get them all sooner or later

i also just added the CRT forward shift full manual valve body to the BB 727

the front 1/2 of the MH drive shaft is long enuff for my 88 short bed truck

cut it down 2" and add the spline/slip yoke to it

4" u-joint on one end and a 7290 on the other
