I am getting ready to paint my 70 coronet 440 and am wondering what the best cheap base paint you guys use. My car will be a "driver" not an OE resto. I have used Nason base before and it didn't cover very well. I have used Omni before and it covered well and liked it but I have heard a lot of negative things about it. My friend used to use Crossfire a lot but is now unhappy with it. As far as clear goes, I have always liked Nason 465. And yes, I know that the cheaper bases don't match as well. Where I live, Chroma Base is over $600/gallon and Omni is $100 for Hemi Orange.

I've had VERY good results with Omni on daily drivers. Held up very well. Wouldn't hesitate to use again.

Nason is also a good paint. Made by Dupont.

Ya, I had a different 70 Coronet painted w/Sublime (Omni) it looked really good. I had it for a couple of years and sold it out of this area- so I don't know how it looks now. Sublime is also expensive because of the blonde metalic.

Matrix,Wandabase,Valspar,Pro-spray would be my choices. Nason(lower end of DuPont) and Omni(lower end of PPG),Dimension(lower end of Sherwin Williams) are watered down and will take more than 3 coats to get coverage, meaning you would need more paint and reducer ,than if you had went with better paint Matrix,Wandabase,Valspar,Pro-spray (all of them are on their own) on the other hand covers in 1 to 2 coats.I've sprayed just about every paint brand out there and speak from 20+ years of experience ,not a weekend or once every 5 years painter

Thanks Stephen, I have seen your posts in the past and have always appreciated them. If you were me and wanted a cheaper "driver" paint job- would you go with the matix system or use a particular brands epoxy, high build, base, and/or clear.

$600.00 a gallon for the base or the base and clear? I paid a little over $300.00 for a gallon of PPG base color.

BTW my car is FJ5 and I don't think it has any flake in it.

$600 just for the base in Hemi Orange-Dupont. Paint prices fluctuate quite often.

No flake in the original Sublime--only in the 'new' version reintroduced on chargers back in about 2005ish.

A friend just shot some Omni (ppg) on a mid-80's dodge pickup. Its a factory red truck. PPG base was 600, the Omni was 100.

He said he took other red paints left over from previous jobs and applied a base before applying the final coats of the correct paint.

Meaning, it will take several coats of the cheaper hues to cover.

You should probably add color to your sealer before painting the final coats of color.

My buddy wants me to shoot his 94 vw with the "restoration shop" brand paint from TCP Global on ebay. Their base/clear kit that comes with 1gal base/1gal clear + activators is $200. He wants to try it so I guess we'll see.

I did this Roadrunner in Omni R4 and it came out very nice.,But like one of the other posters mentioned Omni is very watered down.
My Paint guy adjusted the mix and doubled the formula for the fillers in the paint, and cut the amount of clear down.
This stuff covered amazingly...I probably could have done the car in one double coat !
You might check into the Eastwood paint, they have a new line of factory color paints at a good price..

I have some "restoration shop" brand mixed in AMC orange to paint my 440. I havn't sprayed it yet, but I'm curious of the coverage.

I got great coverage with 2 coats of Omni "Desert turquoise"

I hear the Omni single stage paint is watered down but the Base/clear paint was pretty nice.

I sprayed this dart with Omni last year. took 3 coats to cover over gray sealer. I like omni's high solids clear.
