Anytime you are pushing the limits of the block you are using and stand a risk of detonation.

what are the perameters that dictate..they are needed..?

When you run a steel rod any vibration especially detonation beats the bearing and then beats the crank many block get hurt from this.

what about aluminum rods...are bad..?

You never want to beat on the engine cold. Refrain from using the engine to slow car down. And extreme oil temperature is hard on them.

why wouldnt i want them in my build?

If you plan to sit in traffic for long periods of time. If you plan to run your engine stupid hot or go out on a 30 degree day start the engine and rev it to 8,000.

race car...prolly a stroker..with no2..

When you run one of these power adders you will likely detonate. Most people don't realize this but when you detonate you can actually lift the heads off the block just from the vibration. You pull the bottom end down and see main cap walk. Alluminum rods absorb this and save the other parts. You just need to replace them they don't last forever like steel rods. Steel rods kill the block so it's a tossup. I run them in everything.

Heat and cold cycles is what wears out the strenght in alluminum rods. Some say they look at a visit to the dragstrip one long heat cycle. I guess that just depends on the racer.
