DaytonaTurbo OP Too Many Posts Joined: Feb 2003 Posts: 21,318 Manitoba, Canada	I've been in the process of stripping my engine bay down to bare metal and wow is this ever a slow, agonizing process, at least the way I've been doing it. I know it's necessary because there are 3 layers of poorly prepped paint over top of the factory finish, so I want to get it all off. What are you guys doing to get the job done?

Anonymous Unregistered A	A braided wire cup wheel on an angle grinder does an awesome job. You have to be careful around holes so you don't oval them out and around edges (it hurts if it gets ahold of you!) Cheap too! My angle grinder came from Harbor Freight and was $20.00 on sale. I bought 3 and keep a grinding wheel on one, wire cup wheel on one, and a cutoff wheel on another. DaytonaTurbo OP Too Many Posts Joined: Feb 2003 Posts: 21,318 Manitoba, Canada	What I was doing today was using the liquid paint stripper to soften up the paint, then cleaning it off with the wire wheel. It works okay but I can't get into the corners very well with it where the inner fenders meet the firewall or the rad support. I do have a handheld sandblaster, I tried it and it does work, but again, a very slow process. Do those wire wheels with the nylon "wires" work better than the wheels with the braided steel wires?

Anonymous Unregistered A	I do use a "spot blaster" for the corners and hard to get at areas. There's lots of surface area so it takes a while.

RoyceFlo73 enthusiast R Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 374 CONNECTICUT	I just did mine a couple weeks ago, I used aircraft skin remover and pretty much painted the entire bay one section at a time. It would sit for 15-20 minutes and the paint would bubble pretty good. Then i used a high pressure attachment on a garden hose and most of it pealed off pretty good. I didn't have three coats to go through though. Anyways, i did that and just used a wire wheel to clean the last bits of stubborn paint. You have to paint it on pretty thick though and DEFINATLY where gloves. I've been around a share of solvents and this stuff is nasty. I think i bought 2 or three cans of the stuff for like 11$ a can at autozone.

And an old paintbrush too (you don't want to reuse that brush for painting anything though). If it works that well for the driver side frame rail, it can't fail for the inner fenders!! Brush on, wait for 10 minutes, scrape off, brush again for the next layer if it stayed on. Will get the large flat areas clean in a hurry. You may use a heat gun to help the scraping but brake fluid alone is already pretty good...

elitecustombody pro stock Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 1,572 Jacksonville Florida	sandblasting works for me,it's the fastest method and I know I got every bit of any crust in corners and seams,but I'm sure other home remedies work too,just not as efficient and usually will take hours, also on small things if I don't want to get media or sand all over the place, I use Aircraft stripper in aerosol can,it can be purchased at any autoparts store

Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 20,561 Eagle, Idaho	I used the 3m stripping dics for the open areas and then put sticky backed 80 grit on popsicle and wood paint stir sticks to get into the corners. A dremel tool with the various wire tips is also goof for digging the crust out of the spot welds ect.

Wear a mask when you do this please. I follow through with my gasoline powered pressure washer which has a sand siphon attachment and let loose the 2500 psi on the engine bay. You'll finish quick. Just duct tape any holes from the other side of the firewall and cover any electrical terminals. Blow through with an air compressor and start the wire brush on the metal. When you are done with all that and its shiny...lay down some WD-40 on it so it doesnt oxidize or you'll be with a wire brush again. Too many places for the abrasive to go without the car being stripped IMO.
