Does the shifter move? Could have popped one or more clips off.

Or is the shifter stuck, like it is jammed?

I want my fair share

The shifter moves it will shift into 3rd and 4th but not first and second or back into the reverse position. I removed all the shift rods and the reverse tab and 1st and 2nd tab are both stuck. 3rd and 4th moves freely. Is there a reverse lock out jammed?

Get under thereand see if you can move the lever. Reverse is farthest toward the back of the car on the bottom. Put a crescent wrench on it and try to move it toward the front.

I used to have to do this frequently with my Cuda (before the TKO swap), and also with a 69 Valiant with a 3 on the tree that I owned in the 80's and 90's. They both had sloppy, worn out shifters, and you could move the shifter out of position without actually moving the levers on the transmission. If you weren't careful, the shifter would slip into neutral without moving the tranny out of the gear it was in. Once the shifter was 'out of position', it wouldn't go into any other gear, including the gear the tranny was in, and there was no way to get it working again without crawling underneath. To get going again, I would make sure the shifter was in neutral, determine what lever on the tranny was in gear, then move that lever into it's neutral position, get back in and drive away. But, make sure you have the emergency brake on or the wheels chocked if you're on any kind of slope so you don't start rolling when you pop it into neutral. As said, a crescent wrench works great to move the tranny levers. A few years before I did the TKO swap, I put a better (less sloppy) shifter in the Cuda, and never had a problem after that.

Take all of the rods off the trans to rule out the shifter mechanism. Then......

The problem is likely that the cover position is off a bit causing interference between the internal parts of the shifter arms inside the trans. The 1/2 and reverse arm components(on the inside) are postioned very close and will touch if the side cover is a bit too low. Loosen the bolts to the side cover and gently tap the cover upwards. Retighten and check. This will usually get it done.

The crescent trick worked now I'm going to do this also to try and correct the problem. Thanks guys!
