I swapped in the summit cam. Broke it in. Drove it around. Quite a bit of bottom end over the .484. The next day the ticking started, followed soon after by a knocking or popping sound. Is this a collapsed lifter? Youtube vid attached. Video of engine running.

Looking for some hunk of metal?
If you bring the revs up slowly there is a ticking but no popping. Want a vid of that?

I pulled the valve covers all the rockers seem tigh and intact except for one which feels very spongy.
Am going to pull intake.
With the intake out it is clear one of the lifters isn't like the others. You can press the pushrod down by hand and remove it.

Sorry, cam and lifter failure. Why? Oil, too much spring pressure, wrong breakin procedure, bad cam core, poor material used for the lifters, wrong lash adjustment are just some that come to mind.
Need to pull the whole motor apart and inspect and clean everything expecially the oil gallerys.
Sorry again.

Why is that lifter sitting crooked in its boss
Good Question????
Somethings not right there and a crooked lifter bore, hard to imagine, would wipe a cam in a nanosecond

Have you seen any lifters that were worn on that angle. I have seen them badly cupped, but not like the one he shows. I would check the diameter of the lifter bore and the diameter of the affected lifter. I think this is more than just a typical flattened cam.
I am assuming this wasn't a virgin block.

No, I think it is the first build on a 77 block because it is only .020 over.
The valve train is non adjustable for this setup.
The .484 cam that was in there did not have this trouble.
The other lifters showed signs of wear, but this was the only one that looked like that.
Thanx for the help, though. The cam did make good power. I'll break it apart and see how the rest held up. Those metal shavings had to go somewhere.

I know this will seem like a silly question, but they were new lifters with the new cam right? The OP only mentioned a new cam. I assumed new lifters as well.

Like Snoopy said , that looks like the lifters aren't the right size for the bore. The lifters should be snug and have no side to side movement. It looks like both the lifters in that piture are cocked.
I think it's a optical illusion, no one would put lifters in loose. Now once the lifter started to wear, then I could see it getting outta wack.
The engine would not last 10 mins if the lifters were loose in there bores.

I just went through the same type of thing with a MP 509 cam and lifters. #8 intake lifter stuck and wiped the cam lobe.
When I dropped oil pan it looked like metal flake paint in there. I had to do a complete teardown, wash and rinse. I put all new main and rod bearings in, got new cam etc, almost together. Maybe fire tomorrow or sunday....Good luck on your motor.

What replacement lifters did you buy?

I decided to go with a completely new cam. Bought the Lunati VooDoo cam and lifter kit #60304.
Hopefully everything will go ok this time. If not I'm going roller.
