I just brought home a 67 fast back barracuda 273 auto power nothing. It has some rust and I have floor pans on th way as I hope to tackle that first. I am thinking ahead and I don't know if I will use a big block or stay small. It seems 67 was a one year odd ball idler arm? What else should I worry about ? Will a b block bolt to this k frame? Or would I be better off with a 68 frame or an aftermarket tube style? I am trying to make this car into a less restored more street strip car than my charger. For allot less money!
Thanks!

the 67 k-frame idler arm is a deal breaker, they're VERY expensive compared to the later models and thats if you can find one.
your best bang for the buck would be to look for a 73-75 v-8 dart or duster for cheap, maybe wrecking yards. they have the v-8 mounts AND the bonus of disc brakes and LBP wheels. i snagged a beater 4 dr. car for $250 and was able to use all of the above and the reasonably strong 8.25 rear end. sold the motor and trans for a net cost of zero. good luck !

And, as long as the subject is K frames, will the 73 and up spool frame also let a bb spool mount drop in?

Um yeah that too.

A parts car sounds like the way to go, there is even one on craiglist, just what I need more cars.

A reasonably simple cut and weld to the motor mount saddles of the 73-76 A-body V8 k-member will result in a copy of the old Direct Connection unit. A big block will NOT drop in the PROPER location without this mod. The mounts used are the 74-78 passenger car big block spool mounts.

looks like the slant 6 K 73-76 can be cut for a SB. Is this correct? The DS mount is approx. 2-1/4" taller than the SB V8 mount.

No, as I understand it the mount saddle is not the same length and they may not be in the same relative position.

Back to the original question, it really depends on how much use/abuse and what other changes/repairs are required. The big disadavantage of your '67 K is that one year only idler arm. I ran my '67 from '89 - 2002 with original /6 K, a 340, and a fair number of autocrosses. Over that span I replaced the idler 3 or 4 times and put on about 80,000 miles. So if you're only driving it 2-3000 miles a year it may not be worth the time and money to switch. OTH if you're already pulling the engine and suspension, or planning on some hard use, then it maybe it is worth swapping Ks. (So yes, I did finally switch to a '68 small block K)

The next disadvantage is the biscuit style mounts. My own experience has been that a simple solution to breaking the rubber bisquits was adding a solid torque strap. That was Schumacher's advice and recommendation when I called. Of course they also have the fail-safe biscuits and I think someone else is making another version that does the same thing.

Now if you're car already has a front sway bar and you want to switch to a '73+ K-frame, you will also need the matching through K sway bar and control arms with correctly placed tabs.

And not that you asked but a oouple of other uh, quirks of a '67 are the gas tank has only one strap (going side to side) and the one year only windshield weatherstrips.

You can run the early sway bar on the late k-member by drilling the mount holes and using early LCAs. Some of the 73 k-members have the front holes for the sway bar brackets.

I am surprised to find that some people think that ALL A bodies had disc brakes from 1973 on. THEY DIDN'T. I have owned several that were 4 wheel drum, even in 1976. It was plain stupid on Chryslers part. From 73-76, you could have 4 wheel 9 inch drum brakes, 4 wheel 10 inch drum brakes OR 11 inch disc with 10 inch rear drums. They could have made discs STANDARD and deleted the drum option and still saved money by stockpiling only one set of parts.
Also, any 73-76 A body with 4 wheel drums had the small bolt circle PERIOD. The 4 wheel drum cars were also 7 1/4 axle only. The 8 1/4 axle was never offered in a small bolt circle.
Regarding the 1967 K frame: My 67 Dart GT had a V8 stud idler deal. I swapped in a 73-76 V8 spool mount K frame mainly to take advantage of the better motor mounts. The better Idler mount was aa bonus. I also made a 1 1/4 sway bar by modifying a bar from an 84 GM truck!

Good point, and that's pretty easy to do.
