I know how you feel Frito....'74 till '82 is "fuzzy" for me too!!!! I sold my '62 Max Wedge clone in '74 and took up someother 'activities' till about '82, then started getting back into racing when I bought the old car back.

WEIRD, I just returned from a drag strip in West Virginia, (Kanawha Valley) and as we pulled in I see the orginal Rod Shop Anglia of Rick Stickle and Bob Riffle. It is now owned by George Reese of Scott Depot, WV. It has been restored and repainted by the orginal painters, Bill Roell, Shortround of Cincinatti. Still running with small block and Hilborns.

The Vette's had Gil Kirk's name on them. The 70 Duster was built by Bob Riffle. When they got the Dodge deal in 1971, they reskinned the car as a Demon. Same with Jim Thompson's 70 Cuda - it became a 71 Challenger. In fact the old Cuda body that was cut off still makes an occassional appearance at shows. Try to find my old Mopar Action article, October 91, I think. I interviewed Jim Thompson, Gil Kirk and Butch Leal for the team's complete history. Everything anyone needs to know was in that article. Thanks.

Here's what the 1970 Cuda looked like in 1971.

Larry Morgan 1971? Old Iron Butterfly car.

I think your too early. I don't remember seeing Larry Morgan having "official" driving chores at The Rod Shop until around 1979, 1980 or 81?. Before that he drove his Dodge Challenger in the brackets. The '64 max wedge Dodge, if my memory is correct was owned at one time by a mechanic who worked for Ray Christian...."Moocher". In 1978 or '79? Moocher started his relationship with them but didn't have the Rod Shop team colors. From what I remember the original color of the '64 was a dull blue. Better yet, call Bruce Meihls(614)836-2503 and get the scoop...

I can tell you now since Ray's passing, that there were some "things" done to the car getting it ready for the 1977(?)"SPRINGNATIONALS" stock class. Ray and Moocher brought the car over to Starkey's transmission shop in Columbus and everyone had to leave... it didn't help. I think it went out in the first round.

all this is subject to how good my memory is now..

Fred

Couldn't help but notice "Northland Dodge" on the car.. That's a part of ROD SHOP history that never gets talked about.

Carl Kirk was Service Manager at the dealership during this time. Jim Thompson (who ironically later became Service Manager at Northland during the late eighties/early ninties) told me "they just threw the name on there". Maybe so Kirk could get extra time off work? Northland sold out to Bob Caldwell CP in 1992. The dealership moved across the street 2 years ago in the "consolidation". The building sits empty now.

Now West Virginia resident and ADRL competitor Carl Kirk was the service manager at Northland Dodge located on Morris Road, just East of the old Northland Mall. He had a Willys before he teamed up with Ed Eckard and a fellow named Blackwood to campain the Rod Shop B/A Charger.

I thought it was Gil Kirk involved with the Rod Shop cars.

We were busy running 1 & 2 Willys gassers in the 60's and early 70's , and I remember that National Trail Raceway would have "Rod Shop Day". Does anyone else remember those events?

Gill Kirk owned the Rod Shop. Carl Kirk lived on Eisenhower Drive just off Morse Road before moving to Kermit, West Virginia. Carl was involved in some Rod Shop stuff and an owner of the B/A altered Charger. I don't recall Gill Kirk ever driving one of the Rod Shop cars. Jeff, chime in here.
