This topic came up recently and some questions were left unanswered..... When was the Original Rod Shop racing team started? And by who? Was it factory backed or private? My guess was 1970. My only basis is I dont remember seeing any cars prior to the 1970/1971 Challengers & Chargers with that distinct paint scheme.

Thank you Fred. That was very helpful. Leaned some things too. Leave it to Reasbeck to have this in his archives. He's a Guru when it comes to this stuff. Its not surprising he wrote the article. Doug

I remember Dick Shroyer and the "Shroyer Shaker", Eckerd & Kirk Charger, Dave Conners Camaro rag top,and the Anglia of Stickle & Riffle. I remember the vetts but not the drivers. The 65 Plymouth, 70 Plymouth, Duster and Challenger in 1970 I can't place. Any help??
I know how you feel Frito....'74 till '82 is "fuzzy" for me too!!!! I sold my '62 Max Wedge clone in '74 and took up someother 'activities' till about '82, then started getting back into racing when I bought the old car back.
If you like drag racing, support your local track.

The Vette's had Gil Kirk's name on them. The 70 Duster was built by Bob Riffle. When they got the Dodge deal in 1971, they reskinned the car as a Demon. Same with Jim Thompson's 70 Cuda - it became a 71 Challenger. In fact the old Cuda body that was cut off still makes an occassional appearance at shows. Try to find my old Mopar Action article, October 91, I think. I interviewed Jim Thompson, Gil Kirk and Butch Leal for the team's complete history. Everything anyone needs to know was in that article. Thanks.

Couldn't help but notice "Northland Dodge" on the car.. That's a part of ROD SHOP history that never gets talked about.
Carl Kirk was Service Manager at the dealership during this time. Jim Thompson (who ironically later became Service Manager at Northland during the late eighties/early ninties) told me "they just threw the name on there". Maybe so Kirk could get extra time off work? Northland sold out to Bob Caldwell CP in 1992. The dealership moved across the street 2 years ago in the "consolidation". The building sits empty now.

In 1972 while in Columbus to attend the NHRA Spring Nationals, I stopped in the Rod Shop with some friends. Was met inside by a great guy, Cliff Ghetti, who designed the Rod Shop paint scheme for the cars. Took us out back to see the cars getting ready for the weekend. Very small shop but some big time racing & drivers ran out of that shop.

Which car are you talking about? I owned Clyde's '63 Savoy aluminum nose car briefly in the mid 70s. Here is how it looks today restored...

Frito Add Roy Johnson to this list. He drove the 64 Polara for Dave Bortman at the 72 or 73 IHRA Winternationals in Lakeland FL. And maybe a couple of other races after that.. I remember because he went thru the field of NHRA SS guys too easily and comented to me and my future wife after the race that it was easier racing the NHRA gus who had come over to IHRA to play than it was to beat the IHRA regulars. I also remember because both he and Dave ended up in the SS Finals and had to race each other. Roy red lited to Dave on a pre arranged deal. They also ran the race on Firestone Drag tires and changed them to Goodyears in the staging lanes prior to the final round. Goodyear was one of their sponsors. Roy converted his "new" 71 Challenger to a NHRA SS car after the winternationals and ran a small block in it. Alan later drove the car.
