I just bought my boy an '02 Dakota. I replaced the leaking Mopar battery with a maintenance free battery. While cleaning up and underneath the battery tray I saw this and wondered what it is and what does it do. Here's a couple of pictures of the top and the bottom of the battery tray.
Thanks.

I think it is a battery temp sensor. Not 100% on that because some seem to have them and some don't. But i think thats what it is.

Thanks guys. I wonder how it works? Is it looking for, a high temp or a low temp?

It's a regular temp sensor. The computer use it to determine alternator output. Hot batteries charge differently than cold ones.

Its mostly for the charging system. When its colder out the charging target voltage will go up and down in hotter temps. Say 30 degrees it may be 14.8 and at 90 degrees 13.4. Ron

OK, I understand now. Just I had never seen something like this before. Thanks for all the responses.

It also sets the check engine light in a 96 Dakota. We had to dig it out of a pile when we swapped in the 96 318Mag in our 84 Ramcharger.
