I am running a blaster 2 coil and MSD ready to run distributor...should I be bypassing the Ballast resistor?

RIght now I am hooked up to it and getting 6.8 volts to the coil while the car is running.

I have done the mad electrical and denso alternator upgrades if that makes any difference at all.

Does page 6 of the instructions say "Bypass the ballast resistor if equipped"?

It does say that John. But then the picture shows it hooked up with the ballast....?

Does your page 6 have a picture?

In the pic they probably just use the ballast for reference, I go by the printed text.

The instructions that come with the Blaster 2 coil state that the ballast is only needed with point type distributors.

I beleive MSD recomends a .8 ohm ballast with the blaster coil.

Seeing as the blaster 2 coils are supplied with a ballast resistor, I imagine you'd need one. Their installation instructions do say that if you are running an MSD style ignition, you don't.

Ok, so the blaster 2 need a ballast when used w points but NOT w msd. Is that correct?

That's at least my understanding. Instructions clearly indicate that a ballast is to be used with points, that it is not to be used with an MSD 6 or 7 box, but it doesn't say one way or the other about standard, stock electronic ignition. If it helps, there are a number of websites with conflicting answers on the topic. I'm using my blaster 2 WITH the stock ballast resistor and it works just fine.

Thanks Pat. We know the points cannot handle much more than ~2&1/2 amps of current so that requires a ballast (& coil) to not exceed that pretty mediocre amt. the dist just triggers the ECU to do the same but it (the ECU) can handle interrupting more current. You are using the blaster 2 w a ballast (what ohms) and an elecronic dist? I think the limiting factor is how much current the ECU can interrupt and the (stock type electronic) dist is a minor player. I'm pretty ignorant on MSD's workings but Don @FBO says more and more of their products are being sourced "over there" and the moniker "Might Sputter and Die" scares me . I hate being stranded and I never did like hitchhiking (even in my 20's) & I did alot.

Robert: I'll have to check on the resistance of my ballast resistor. I'll check on that tomorrow morning. But yes, I am running a blaster 2, electronic distributor, and stock 2 prong ballast resistor.

If it helps,I've ran the 6al,blaster 2 coil and a Mopar E/Dist without the resistor for years with no problems.
