There has to be something simple with these carbs. If you get into the front and back carbs or the six pack the idle goes up you can do anything you want it stays up. All i have to do is turn the key off and restart it everything is fine. Any ideas????

Be a little more specific. Is your idle racing?

couple of things. have you had the carbs apart? check for binding/sticking of the the throttle shafts. disconnect the throttle linkage to the outboard carbs and set your idle. reconnect the linkage but they must fit straight in, no fudging either way, back or forth. these are things that i went thru. found the shafts binding from over torqueing the base plate bolts. either manifold or base plates not flat. backed off the torque and all was fine. also check for the throttle plates binding in the bores. you may have to loosen the screws and center the plates in the bores. to do this disconnect all the linkages, throttle and vaccume. hope this helps.

Check to be sure your distributor is returning the timing to an 'at idle' setting. Is your vacuum advance hooked up? Disconnect it and see if there is a difference. Sometimes the carb(s) isn't the problem.

I have the 6 pack from hell. Bought new from year 1..it sat on shelf for 9 months or so,unopened, and the front carb had a cracked bowl...middle carb had a gasket screwed up in the back of the carb, and now the rear carb is sucking at the base. My distributor is fine though.....does the throttle speed up or die if you cover the center carb with your hand ?

if you are talking about covering the entire top area it will die.

When i got the car the distributor did not and still don't have a vacuum hose on it. It was pluged off. This sixpack set up was a used unit when i got it we put a kit in all three carbs everything works fine the car runs hard. But sometime when you get into the sixpack the idle will be around two thousand for a while or until i turn the car off and restart it.

Have you checked the mechanical advance like suggested? The idle will be erratic if light advance springs are used.

yeah you have to tune it at idle with the outboards disconected. Once you get a good vacuum reading and decent speed set the outboard rods. There should be no change in idle speed. if it starts to race than you have to adjust them some more.
