What is the physical difference between a Max Wedge and a 440 intake? I have a line on a rare aftermarket 440 intake that has been "modified to fit Max Wedge heads", but I'm worried I'd never be able to use it if I bought it. On the flip side, are Max Wedge heads a direct bolt-on to a 440? Is the exhaust pattern the same as a normal 440? Thanks guys, don't have any Max Wedge experience!

The max wedge intake port is taller. So it depends on the intake side of your head if it can opened up to match other wise you will have a vacuum leak.

Hmmm.... Thanks for the info! Are the Max Wedge exhaust ports/flange still the same as a regular 440?

What good is "rare" if its been modified? Especially if the mod doesn't suit your needs.
Would you pass on a $200 Edelbrock STR cross ram with two different tops, even if it had been modded for a Max Wedge?
I'll have to see it in person, but I think a little creative port welding and machining and I should be able to use on a 440 again if I don't want to swing for Max Wedge heads.
I guess at the very worst I can flip it to someone who would need it...

I'm pretty sure the MW heads have bigger exhaust ports as well. This head has been ported and the exhaust seats replaced, but still might give you some idea of the port size.
That intake would be popular with the NSS racing crowd.

I see these "deals" all the time - not STR's mind you - but "modified", used or damaged stuff. When you factor in either the time or cost to make it right they're often not a deal at all.
If someone were going to use this STR on a 440 and wanted to fix it right they'd have to weld up the ports then port them out again - and there's no telling how far in they'd need welding. Add that labor cost to the price you're going to ask and all of a sudden maybe the thing isn't such a good deal. Keep that in mind before you spend your hard earned money.
For $200 I'd probably buy it BUT... I have max wedge heads!
