i have a 85 318 that sat awhile, freshened up the outside of it and installed a new oil pump, every thing is back together except dist and valve covers.how to prime the engine with oil???? thanks
It's been a while since I've worked on a small block. I assume the pump is the same as the older small blocks from the 60's and 70's in which case a 3/8" piece of hex rod turned clockwise by a drill should work fine.

take out the intermediate shaft (turn it w a large screwdriver & see if it easily comes up/out & I forget which way). Need a 5/16" hex shaft or a piece of 3/8 round rod and turn the end down on your bench grinder to a hex shape to match the end of the inter shaft (be sure & deburr it) and pull the spark plugs and have a helper turn the crank w a breaker bar and a 1&1/4" socket SLOWLY CW while you spin the drill CW being carefull not to let the shaft hit the ID of the bushing (doesnt hurt to wrap several inches of it w tape) until he hits the 2 seperate sweet spots where each head starts getting oil. You're done. turn timing marks to 10BTDC w the #1 valves loose (#1 compression) and set the inter shaft/dist in to where the rotor is facing to the front and slightly to the pass side if you have your wires routed like OE which is a good idea & if not reclock the inter shaft/dist until the rotor is under whichever terminal the #1 wire is plugged into. Make sure the vac can has room to be moved a bit in either direction and line up the reluctor blade w the magnet slot and snug the dist down so it is tight but can still be moved by hand w a bit of effort and this will fire it @ 8 or 9 BTDC
live every 24 hour block of time like it's your last day on earth

Put black electrical tape around the rod where it goes through the bushing!
NOPE ... and I can see SOMEONE have never actually DONE THIS ..or - at the very least - have not done it very much.
The oil attacks the tape .. it gums-up and can FALL OFF ...and then you have to pull the oil pump off/out.
NOT that bad of a job if it is a B engine .. but an A engine ....can be a MAJOR undertaking.

I've had the tape on my priming rod for 20 years maybe replaced it twice. You must use crappy tape doc. I use the shiny black tape
No .... I used a rod like the one I am having done ..... anyone ever hear of A&W Performance Products ? .. They made that rod that way many years ago. I was a dealer for them and maybe sold 50 of those.
Now the way I did pre-oiling was I used a 1/2 or 3/8 drill with a handle on it ...and would lay the drill over and let the drill run for 10 minutes or so ...while I turned the motor over with a breaker-bar.
B U T ...if you want to stand-over the motor and hold the drill steady ......
..... GO ferr it !!
