I have been pleased with my purchases from the source EXCEPT for the two mini starters I bought. Both have the same problem with not working until the engine cools. One is on a 496 stroker and one is on a basically stock 360 LA. The 360 is a drag car. The problem was so bad that I actually went back to the stock starter on it.
OH SNAP!! My source starter is doing the same thing. I was getting ready to change the battery cable, (4 gauge with battery in the trunk) and I wondered if some, part, all, of it might be the starter.
Anybody else experience heat soak with the source starter on a regular basis?
You need to use a beefy ground strap, similar to the battery cable to ground your motor if you did a batt. relocate to the trunk. It sounds like heat soak when the starter drags but if the ground strap is too small it takes the juice away from the starter and your teeny ground strap will be extremely hot to the touch. OR your starter is crap.

Is there a decent mini starter available at any of the local auto parts?

Can you please post a couple pics of the area that you had to grind down (before and after if possible) to get the starter to fit better? With the heat problems, are these ceramic coated headers involved?
If you have to grind it down to clear the header then the tubes are too close and will have heat soak issues, get another style starter.
I didn't grind it to clear the headers, the headers clear fine. It was just easier to get a wrench on the bolt by shaving some of the casting off

Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first.
Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

Thanks. I even looked at that article and did not see it. I just picked up a starter from a 90 Dodge PU with a 360 for 35 bucks. Hopefully it works fine. It seems that most are using between years 92-95. I do not see much difference between the 90 and 92 model though???

Got mine at Autozone, life time warranty. Got one for a 1992 Dakota 318 engine. Fits perfect. Works perfect. Have had it now for about 3 years.
