Yesterday I was on the phone with Comp Cams because ordering their Pro Plasma nitriding service was unavailable on their web site - clicking on the link to add the product to their shopping cart produced a "product is unavailable" page (regardless of what cam I had in the cart). So I called them. They redirected my call twice. Then I am connected with their tech person. He told me that the pro plasma machine was broken and they had disabled the product on their web site. Then he said they recently fixed it so they would bug their web guy to re-enable the product on their web site and that it'd take about an hour. One hour later... still no worky. One day later... still no worky. So I call them back. I get a sales person. I am informed by this sales person that the nitriding service is no longer order-able via the web site and that it can only be added via phone. Fine, I say... what about the free shipping for web orders? Nope, I'd have to pay $5 for shipping, but I'd get extra fast service because I ordered via phone. My BS alarms start to go off... I explain I want the 20-230-4 cam with the nitriding service done on it. I give him my address, card, etc. Then I ask him how much it would be. He gives me a number pretty close to $300... and this is with a $20 discount he decided to give me... WTH? I ask him to break it down... how much is the nitriding service??? He says $105. Well, on the web site the price for the 20-230-4 cam is $146... so how does $146 + $105 come to $300? He says he has to order a special custom grind of the cam for the nitriding service to work on it. WTH?!! My BS alarm is now blaring. I am absolutely positive that when I added the nitriding service and that cam to my shopping cart many months ago (when it was working then) that the total came to be about $250... I should have ordered it then! Is anybody else experiencing something weird with Comp Cams??? Am I getting ripped off???

My new cam came from Engle because of the same problem with CompCams. Told me one price, then another, then another. And after 4 months of the cam not arriving and different reasons why. I just cancelled the order and had Engle grind me one. I don't care if Comp pays contingency.....no more of their crap for me!
Hey Chucko!
4 months? Wow I don't have that kind of patience. My block is just about ready to be assembled. Just need the cam bearings and cam to give to Roger at Standard Machine for installation of cam bearings and checking of fitment. I'll wait up to 2 weeks. If no cam, I'll cancel the order and get a similar cam from somewhere else.

I'm supposed to be getting a nitrided cam from Comp any day now. Guess we'll see when it shows up.
If you don't mind saying, which cam is it and how much did you pay over the price of a regular cam?

I have bought two of Comps Nitrided cams. The first one I ordered was close to two years ago. At that time the service was $105. I think. When I ordered a second one it had to be a custom grind to get the Plasma Nitride and that was a $150. or so fee including the Nitriding. The Nitrided Cam I have is chamfered on the edges. Maybe that is why it is a custom grind only deal.

Well at leaast you got thru by phone. I tried for 2 weeks to get thru and the phone is ALWAYS busy... except early in the morning when no one is there to answer it, then you get voice message. I wanted a large Comp roller reground to a smaller lobe size. the rep by email told me they would have to charge me $280 to do it because they would have to cut the base circle so much smaller.!!??? BS meter maxed out Reducing lift and duration would not require reducing the base circle, only if he was adding lift and duration. The guy did not know what he was talking about and he is a tech guy. I called 3 other cam companies and each of them asked $120 to regrind a roller cam. I went with Engle cams. Best tech guy and easy to deal with.

Comp Actually has a PRO-55 Core for a 59* Flat tappet... I would do that hardened core instead of nitriding anyhow....
I dunno what they would charge for guy off street, but I just had a custom FT done on that core from them & I'll just say it was under $250.
$249.95????
