Going to look at a BB 727 tomorrow. Came from a running '71 Cuda with a 440, and he went to a small block after an engine problem and a cash problem. Trans runs fine, he says, and he doesn't know the year of the trans except to say that it was from an "early" car that had the modified bellhousing with cooling vents for the torque converter. What in the heck is he talking about? I am planning on counting the splines, but where can I find the ID code for the year model? It has a TCI reverse manual valve body and the price is $150.

Year doesn't matter if the splines are correct, it will work. There are variances from different years but nothing to worry about. Even an early coarse spline unit can be converted to late model with input shaft and reaction support change.

I hope it is 24 spline because I already have a torque converter to use. He has a TCI 10" converter for another $150, but I don't really want it. It hasn't been raced but I already have a 24 spline to use. So I guess I can either pass or toss in $300 for both the trans and the converter.

from a van maybe with the hole for timming marks on the TC

maybe they cut holes and called it that???

look at the cover on the tail shaft to see if its a truck unit it will be on the side..2 screws and cover for the c-clip/snap ring that removes the tail housing

car would be under the tranz mount itself

also might check to see if the center of the tranz mount boss is at 7" from main case

my 78 MH 727 has the mount 2" forward and is 5" from case to center of mount boss

i had to move xmember forward 2" to bolt it in my 88 400 truck build

so I would first

#s on the drive side pan rail will tell you yr and what its from

good luck on it

A later trans won't have the boss in front of the mount for the support for a consol shifter (like a slapstick). Not a show stopper; I have fabbed a mount for the shifter support.

Numbers for the trans are on the rail by the shifter. This may help: Mopar Trans Guide
