Converting my 70 383 RR from the stock ignitions (i.e. points)..Can I use the original stock coil? Will it work w/my elctronic ignition set up?
Thanks!

depends on the type of electronic ignition system your installing?

Short answer, yes. Stock points to stock electronic use the same coil.

I thought the elct coils should not be used with points???

the accel super coil has one for points and one for elect

something about the elect coil burning the points

i would think the points coil would not be the right ohms and weak on the spark with elect dist

I know I burned a lot of points with an elect dist coil on my 68 dart till I used the pertronix conversion and flame thrower coil with the BR bypassed

Used the same part number back in the day.

The Chrysler stock coils for point type and electronic "factory" ignitions are rated differently

The point type coil is rated at 42K volts, with a 76:1 turn ratio, 1.0 ohms Primary, and 12.7 K Ohms secondary

The Electronic "factory" ignition coil is rated at 42K Volts, with a 70:1 turn ratio, 0.7 ohns primary, and 11.8 K Ohms secondary

One of the reasons most people have ignition problems when doing swaps, is the use of incorrect parts, that either make the system perform worse, or encounter "gremlins", or just destroys componets,....and example would be to use the "factory" coil(s) on a Petronix swap, as most do,...the Petronix requires a 100:1 turn ratio, 3.0 ohms primary rated coil, thus the reason so many have problems with Petronix installations,....same goes for factory stuff as well....

kinda what i thought

thats why i by passed the BR on the 85 truck with the points dizzy and pertronix conversion/flame thrower coil

and unhooked the ecu from the harness so it wont have any chance of causing any problems

and on the 88-440 truck with 85 wire harness and a points dizzy..I used a points style accell super stock coil and kept the BR but unhooked the ecu from the harness as it is by passed with the points dizzy..but the BR cuts the juice down for the points...

did I get that right

most likly not..but I know they ran better when hooked up correct
