Been 20 years since I setup a set of gears, not totaly happy with the pattern.

Set of Jeep 3.55 gears in a 75 housing, what do you think? I'm considering pulling it apart again.

I say add a pinion shim then move the carrier if you have to.

That is what I'm thinking, how much is the question.

Ran the car on the stands tonight, perfect! Silent as the grave! Tomorrow I'll road test after swapping brake hardware.

Added a .002 thicker shim to get the pattern where it needed to be.

What did you set the backlash at ? I am in the middle of setting one up and had a very similar pattern.

Looks to me to be to high on the tooth.Dont so much worry about front to back but how deep it is in the tooth. You want it to be as equal as possiable depth. If your back lash is set ok you will have to start adding the pinion shims.Just keep track of what you took off or added so you have something to look at and see what changes occured.

Backlash was right on the money, the pinion depth was off .002.

Took it back apart, added 2 thou and reassembled. Happened to guess right on the amount needed.

Just back from a road test, nice and quiet and the car has a bit more pep.

Needs a cam or that 5.2 magnum I have hanging from the engine hoist =)
