I agree, most of the historical race cars are mere shells of what they should or could be. I've seen Centerline wheels where Super Tricks were, Powerglides where a Lenco belongs, aluminum blocks, 150 cu.in.+ bigger than the original motor. It's just a body with paint after some of these hacks get done with them.
