93 Dodge Stealth, the mid pipe has a small ground strap. Why? The front pipe has the O2 sensor.
Just wondering.

I'd guess because of the O2 sensor. How far away is the strap? If the ground is not close to the circuit it can create inaccurate voltages/readings.

The strap is about two feet away from the O2 and on a different pipe. I googled grounded exhaust and came across some claims that static electricity build up in the exhaust stream can actually hinder flow but I never heard of that one before! I don't buy it.

Possible answer: The O2 sensor
WAG answer: exhaust flow inside the pipe causing a static electricity charge that could zap the O2
Silly answer: the OE wanted to add a little more time to round up to the nearest tenth for labor, have another excuse for denial of warranty if the strap was off, and make the car more complex....

OK, then how about to prevent any possible arcing that could cause unburned gasses to explode?

It,s for the muffler bearing overide control solenoid actuator module.

It's a dry heat
2 reasons,
1st for a solid ground path for the 02 sensors(primarily for the earlier single wire sensors)

2nd prevent static electricity.

As cars get more complex, poor grounds have become the predominant issue causing complaints. Which is why you'll find automobiles have for the most switched from B+ control( pre-war technology ) to ground control in the past 10 -15 years thru today

Also the imports have always relied heavily on grounds to control operating systems so you'll find them much more prevelant on the import cars
