Does that mean the radio is good and there is just an issue with reception/antenna connection?

Or could it still be something wrong with the inner workings of the radio?

Any easy tests I could do?

might tune it to the strongest local AM station which should get some reception even wo an antennae but iirc the one I had that acted like that it was dead in the water

If it is out of the car, take the lid off the radio. Power it up with a speaker attached. Put your finger on the inside conductor for the antenna connection. Tune it to the nearest radio station and it should hear it. That will eliminate the antenna and cable in the car.
If that does not produce results, the radio needs to go to someone like BigmoneyLewis for repair.
In the Hudson valley, you should be able to get AM radio on your fillings.

If you know for sure your antenna is good, speaker is good, and you have already adjusted the antenna trimmer screw with no results (AM only) then I would say the problem lies in the radio itsself.

What's the antenna trimmer screw?
It's AM only BTW.

Thanks

I think it's a knob or screw on the top or side of the metal case that adjusts the sensitivity of the antennae & you'd tune the dial to a station (not sure if you want a loud local one or a faint long distant one) and adj it to get the best reception

It needs to be set around 1400 khz. It is usually stamped on a sticker on the radio. I have never seen one so mistuned that no local station could be received, even when someone mistakenly tightened up the loose screw.
