Please consider that my car is pretty much a stock 69 b body wagon with a 383/727. I have decided on using the Dynomax side pipes for the car and would like to put on a half decent set of reasonably priced (budget minded, this car will never be raced, just street driven) headers that don't require removing the starter AND will fit with power steering.

Also, there is always the chance that this motor will be freshened up next season or possibly a 390hp 383 from Maund.

Can you guys give me some suggestions on long or short headers that might do the job?

Summit headers $109. They are the same as heddmans I think.

The instruction sheet says you have to remove the starter to install these. Is that so? I had a set of BlackJack headers on a 440 Challenger years ago that burnt up 2 starters because they were so close to it. I finally got sick of it and went to HP manifolds. Pulling the header to change the starter is a pain. Any ideas?

hedman elites. ceramic coated, thick tube, thick flanges, and ~ $350. IIRC they go over the centerlink, too.

I wish they made a small block version.

I have fabricated shields which worked fine, and I also wrapped one starter with asbestos cloth. Worked great! Got a whole roll, so when it gets grungy I can put another piece on. But a tin or aluminum shield is probably better, if you can do it.

How about the Hedman shorties? I don't think you'd have a problem with anything with them, even though they aren't a full lenght header.

I used a mini starter I jacked the car up. Jacked the drivers side up and they went i from the bottom. Pass side is easy. If you want good headers get a set of hooker super comps

Summit is now offering ceramic coated "Summit Brand" headers. Think they're $250-ish.

mini starter is a good upgrade and drops 25lbs off the moder

fit way better with headers

I can r&r the mini starter on my sb with hedman truck headers in place

cant do it with the stock one.and it has to be the shorter stock starter also to just fit

the mini starter on my 440 in the 88 truck spins it over very fast and fires up with a fast flick of the key

IMHO,whatever header you use a mini starter only makes it better for any service to be done on it

BINGO, they look like just what I need. Looks like part # HED-78070. I think they'll be great with the side pipes and yes, I'll do a mini starter when I do the exhaust.

The car is at the shop now getting the front end rebuilt. Soon as I get it back, I'll measure for the side pipes and order up the headers, pipes and starter.

Thank you ALL for your help!
