I just purchased a 440 the cast date on the block is 1973 so I assume it came in a 1974 vehicle. The motor is complete and was out of the car when I got it.My question is it a steel or cast crank? It has the thin balancer that is used on steel cranks but when I pulled the starter to bar the motor over I seen 2 small weights on the converter so I thought only cast cranks had weights on the converter.

I'm gona say you have a cast crank motor due to age and that someone has put the wrong balancer on it.

What are the markings on pad in front at valley pan?

Two small weights on the converter may just be weights to balance the converter it's self. Pad may tell if it a cast crank. If all else fails just look at the crank flange. The cranks casting marks will tell if it's was cast or forged.

Thanks for the replies. The balacer I think is the original as it is as grungy as the rest of the motor.I was kind of thinking that it may be converter balance weights as they are the size of a half a stick of gum each.I can't seem to see the letter on the pad just 440 and a few numbers at the bottom of pad gonna pull the compressor and get a better look. What should the letter be for a steel crank?

There will be a E on the pad after the 440 stamping. The E stands for cast crank. If you look at the crank flange, where the flex plate bolts up, you can ID a forged crand by a 1/4 or so kinda flat fordging line. A cast crank will have a thiner more raised casting line.
The weight you described sounds like converter balance weights as the cast crank balance weight is a thicker weight.

suffix E would denote that it originally (& probably still does) had a cast crank in there

I have had truck engines that were internal balance in 74 or so pickups that had the steel shaft with hd rods.

a 73 dated block would likely come in a 73, nbuless it was dated late in 73. They didn't keep them laying around back then.

In any case, it sounds forged to me. A 440 should be in 73. I have seen 74's forged too, so I think the split came in 74, even though common thinking is otherwise.

Smaller damper and weights on the TC....
One thing left to do. Drop the pan.

Why drop the pan? Just look at the cast/fordging mark on the cranks flange.

Ok I pulled the trans and the crank has a 1 inch notch cut out of the crank flange, the flange is also very shinny and has a pilot bushing installed in it and is drilled for a four speed pilot shaft to go in.I can tap the crnk with a hammer and it has a ring not a thud when hit.I also cleaned the pad and all that is there is 440 at the top right and the numbers 617 at the bottom right. There is no letter before or after the 440.Can anyone tell what I have by this info?

As stated earlier, if there is no E stamped near the 440 on the top pad, it left the factory with a forged crank.
