Can anyone tell me if the PPG/PGW A-Body replacement windshields are the same thickness as the original on a 68 Barracuda. While trying to order one this afternoon, the local glass shop could not answer this question. Also, has anyone used the AMD windshields? If so, how did it fit in the gasket?

Thank you,

Russ

I have always used PPG, and they are identical. There are some manufacturers that come out of Mexico, China and others. STAY AWAY from them. I don't know who AMD gets there glass from, but I highly recommend using PPG! I worked in the glass business for a few years and saw first hand what these foreign companies and others like Safelite can do to make an extra buck!

Thanks for the information, so then you are saying the PPG glass is the same thickness as the original windshield. Does anyone know who the supplier is for the AMD glass?

Pilkington is OK too, however, both suppliers will carry foreign made glass. Make sure you see either the PPG or Pilkington logo on the glass itself!

What's the bad on the chineese glass? Thickness? Shape? Uniformity? Not defending them, just honestly want to know.

I got one for an E-body and it's super thin - about half the thickness of the original that I took out

The glass thickness is the issue I am having. Both PPG and AMD state their whindshields are OEM or a authentic reproduction part but will not or can not say what the actual thickness of thier glass is compared to the original. I have a quote of $299.00 for a PPG windshied installed. I want to go with it but not until they verify that thier product is the same thickness as the original. So far, no one will say.

PPG is top shelf product. Same as orignal in every way just no Chrysler logo. PPG is a major supplier to the OEM. You won't go wrong with them. Stay away from the cheap repop glass being sold on ebag. I've seen some. wavy, thin it's junk. Look at it again a year or two later it's delaminating. Junk, Junk plain and simple.

I don't think PPG makes side or rear glass though.

Troy bought some side glass for his 68 Hemi Dart clone and it was something like 20% thinner. I think made in Brazil?? Bonus for that situation, cheap thin wannabe super stock glass.

I just happened to be out at the farm today and checked the thickness of both an original windhshield for a 67 Coronet as well as the new AMD replacement. Both were very close as far as thickness - the AMD windshield appeared to be fractionally thicker than the original (if I recall the thickness was just about 5/16 of an inch for both) . I'm still waiting on the glass man to install it but will let you know how it fits...

I've had the cheap stuff and it was thin and wavy. The stuff ECS sells is NICE and looks to be the correct thickness. At least the door glass does... The windshield I got from them is very nice too, but I didn't see it before it was installed.

I just spoke with a Pittsburgh Glass Works rep. She states that thier glass is aftermarket and would not verify the thickness of thier windshields is the same as OEM. I am now trying to find a glass installer who has experience with PGW products................. Stand by.

I have an AMD windsheild in the box waiting for my 71 cuda. I can measure it if somebody needs me too. I don't have an original to compare it to though.

I would go with PPG. Make sure they are using the same type of seal since that makes up the gap.

I put in a Pilkington windshield in a 69 B body with a stock windshield seal and it fit just perfectly with the moulding snapping in the original factory clips.

Hi Steve,
Good to hear that it worked out for you! Just a bit on information for those who are asking questions here. The PPG windshields are thinner than the originals. They are approximately 1/64" thinner. I was told by Rick Peek that they do this to save on the cost of glass during manufacturing. He said that once it was installed nobody could tell the difference. (Rick was the General Manager of the PPG Classic Glass facility.) One thing to remember is that most "PPG glass" is no longer made by PPG. Like most modern day companies they are purchasing glass from anyone who will sell it to them at a decent price. The glass you get may actually be the "cheaper stuff" resold through PPG Classic.

All of our glass (ECS) is custom manufactured (for us) by one company. To eliminate all the inconsistencies that are being discussed here, we decided to use only one source to ensure quality control. All of our glass is the exact thickness of the original examples. On a final note, one of the people responsible for bringing AMD glass to market, came to ECS for a glass set (to be used for his personal vehicle) when he restored his car. That should speak volumes about who offers the best product! Of course I might be just a little bias.
